A 23-story hotel in exclusive Miami locale vanishes in seconds with implosion
SUMMARY: A hotel at one of Miami’s most exclusive locations has been demolished to make way for something even bigger. Demolition experts conducted the controlled implosion Sunday of the former Mandarin Oriental, Miami on Brickell Key. The human-made island is at the mouth of the Miami River, across from downtown. Officials say it was the largest implosion for Miami in more than a decade. The 23-story building opened 25 years ago. It collapsed in less than 20 seconds following the blasts. According to Swire Properties, the demolition will make way for the groundbreaking of The Residences at Mandarin Oriental, Miami.

Cruise companies to Alaska are avoiding a popular excursion to Tracy Arm after a massive landslide
SUMMARY: For years, a popular part of many cruises in southeast Alaska has been sailing up Tracy Arm, a long, narrow fjord marked by steep mountains, glittering waterfalls and calving glaciers. But this season, major cruise lines are skipping it. A massive landslide last summer generated a tsunami and pushed a wave high up the opposite mountain wall. Several companies opting out have cited safety concerns with the still-hazardous slopes. Scientists are working to understand not only what caused the slope to collapse, but to understand what other hazards might exist in the fjord. Holland America, Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean are among the companies replacing visits to Tracy Arm with trips to another nearby fjord.

What to know about Trump's tax breaks for tips and overtime when filing state tax returns
SUMMARY: Millions of Americans are expected to claim new federal tax breaks for tips and overtime wages under a law enacted by President Donald Trump. However, many states have decided not to match these federal changes. That means workers who receive federal deductions for tips or overtime will still owe state taxes on those earnings. Federal tax deductions for tips, overtime and auto loan interest are being matched in only about a half-dozen states. Arizona's situation is unique -- the tax deductions are being offered there under an executive order, even though state law has not been changed to officially allow them.

Tribal gas stations offer a reprieve from high prices during Iran war
SUMMARY: Gas prices are still rising due to the Iran war but drivers are saving by fueling up at tribally owned gas stations. Especially in California, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma and Washington state, tribes exempt from state fuel taxes offer much lower prices than gas stations nearby. Apps such as Gas Buddy make finding such stations easy. Nationwide, average prices are up more than $1 a gallon since the war began but some tribally owned gas stations offer savings of 50 cents or more. As with other convenience stores, the real profits aren't in gasoline but selling snacks and, on many reservations, getting drivers to gamble in casinos.

Allies yank support for Swalwell's California governor run after sexual assault allegations
SUMMARY: Prominent supporters of California Rep. Eric Swalwell's bid for governor are withdrawing their support in a stunning political reversal. It comes after the congressman denied allegations that he sexually assaulted a woman twice, including once when she worked for him. Swalwell said in a video posted to social media that the accusation is false. He did not end his campaign. The woman told her account to the San Francisco Chronicle. The AP hasn't been able to independently verify her account or identity. The allegations surfaced weeks before mail ballots are scheduled go out in advance of a June 2 primary election.

Iran war diverts US military and attention from Asia ahead of Trump's summit with China's leader
SUMMARY: President Barack Obama in 2011 declared it was time to leave behind the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and “pivot” to Asia to counter China's rise. Fifteen years later, the U.S. finds itself still at war in the Middle East and pulling military assets from Asia. The Iran war also caused President Donald Trump to delay his highly anticipated trip to China. This has deepened worries that the U.S. is once again getting distracted at the cost of its strategic interests in Asia, where Beijing seeks to unseat the U.S. as the regional leader. Some defend the president's approach, arguing that his forceful steps elsewhere, including in Venezuela and Iran, serve to counter China globally.

Judge told to reconsider national security implications of halting Trump's White House ballroom
SUMMARY: A federal judge has been instructed to reconsider the possible national security implications of halting construction of President Donald Trump’s $400 million White House ballroom. An appeals court panel says in a ruling that it didn't have enough information to decide how much of the project can be suspended without jeopardizing the safety of the president, his family or the White House staff. The case was returned to the trial judge who last month barred work from proceeding without congressional approval, but suspended enforcement of that order for 14 days. The appeals court extended that for three days, to April 17, to allow the Trump administration to seek Supreme Court review.

Trump threatens Strait of Hormuz blockade after US-Iran ceasefire talks end without agreement
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump says the U.S. Navy will immediately begin a blockade of ships entering or leaving the Strait of Hormuz. He spoke after historic U.S.-Iran ceasefire talks in Pakistan ended without agreement earlier Sunday. Trump aims to control the waterway that is crucial for global oil supplies, to weaken Iran's strategic leverage. He instructed the Navy to intercept vessels paying tolls to Iran. The talks ended after 21 hours, leaving a two-week ceasefire in doubt. U.S. officials blame Iran's nuclear ambitions for the breakdown, while Iran accuses the U.S. of overreach. Hungary decides in a key election that could unseat populist Prime Minister Orbán
SUMMARY: Hungarians are voting in a crucial election that could end populist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's 16-year rule. Orbán is the European Union’s longest-serving leader and one of its biggest antagonists. Orbán is known for his far-right populist stance and has faced criticism for undermining democracy and media freedom. His main challenger Péter Magyar leads the center-right Tisza party and has gained traction by focusing on issues like health care and corruption. Magyar calls the election a referendum on Hungary’s future direction. The election is being closely watched across Europe with concerns about external meddling and internal fraud.

Police remove fuel protesters from Dublin center as disruption over soaring costs continues
SUMMARY: Police have broken up a blockade in Dublin by protesters who have disrupted Ireland for a week over the soaring cost of fuel. The government is preparing on Sunday to approve cost-cutting measures to address the high price at the pump. As tractors and trucks left O'Connell Street, protests began to die down elsewhere and police removed demonstrators from Galway docks. The protests have caused chaos, with blockades at Ireland's only oil refinery and vital fuel depots. Police began cracking down Saturday, using pepper spray at the Whitegate refinery in County Cork. The Latest: Trump directs US Navy to blockade the Strait of Hormuz
SUMMARY: U.S. President Donald Trump says the U.S. Navy will “immediately” begin a blockade to stop ships from entering or leaving the Strait of Hormuz, after U.S.-Iran peace talks in Pakistan ended without an agreement. Iran has demanded the right to collect tolls from vessels traveling through the strait, but Trump said Sunday no one who pays them will “have safe passage on the high seas.” Earlier Sunday, the United States and Iran ended 21 hours of face-to-face talks in Islamabad without reaching a deal, leaving the fate of the fragile, two-week ceasefire still unclear. Failed US-Iran talks in Pakistan raise questions about fragile ceasefire
SUMMARY: Ceasefire talks in Pakistan between the U.S. and Iran ended without an agreement, raising questions about what happens when a current two-week truce expires on April 22. As the talks wrapped up in Islamabad in the early hours of Sunday, both sides blamed each other for the failure. There was no word on whether negotiations will resume, and President Donald Trump made new threats against Iran. While the setback does not necessarily mean the war will resume, it showed how entrenched the sides remain after an inconclusive 40-day war.

Lessons learned in '70s have made the US and world economies less vulnerable to oil shocks
SUMMARY: The world economy is experiencing a disorienting flashback to the 1970s. Oil prices are surging in the wake of war in the Middle East, and that's driving up the cost of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel and threatening a return to stagflation. But the U.S. and world economies are less vulnerable now than they were when Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern petroleum producers withheld oil supplies to punish countries that supported Israel in the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Countries have since embarked on a new course to increase their energy efficiency, reduce their dependence on Middle Eastern oil, stockpile fuel against future threats, and find and develop alternative sources of energy.

Buyers fret as the average cost of a new car nears $50K
