TSA agents will soon be paid but it may not mean immediate relief at airport security lines

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to pay Transportation Security Administration officers. Whether that translates into shorter wait times for passengers at airport security lines remains to be seen. Friday's signing comes at a busy travel time of the year with spring breaks at school districts and colleges and the upcoming Passover and Easter holidays. Some passengers with very early flights Saturday reported having little problem getting through airport security lines. But that may have been an anomaly. Others at some of the busiest airports wrote on social media that security lines were growing exponentially longer by the hour.

Swift and widespread, efforts to rebrand César Chavez Day are fueled by emotion and duty

SUMMARY: From California to Minnesota, elected leaders and civil rights groups are scrambling to distance themselves from César Chavez’s name in the wake of sexual abuse allegations. Efforts have been swift and widespread to rebrand events ahead of what typically was a day to celebrate the Latino rights advocate on his birthday, March 31. In Tucson, Arizona, a celebration was instead billed as a community and labor fair. In Grand Junction, Colorado, it’s now the Sí, Se Puede Celebration. The conversations behind the decisions have been anything but easy as supporters deal with conflicted feelings while sorting how best to honor the legacy of the farmworker movement.

Navy shipyard workers approve a contract deal with Bath Iron Works, ending weeklong strike

SUMMARY: Hundreds of employees at one of the U.S. Navy’s biggest shipbuilding contractors have voted to approve a deal with Bath Iron Works, ending a weeklong strike. The shipyard says members of the Bath Marine Draftsmen’s Association ratified a new four-year collective bargaining agreement Saturday that goes into effect immediately. Approval followed an hourslong union meeting at a high school in Maine. The shipyard and the union had negotiated for weeks without resolving differences before the strike began. The company has not responded to questions about whether the strike slowed production.

Bills to pay FAA and TSA workers during shutdowns get introduced but keep stalling in Congress

SUMMARY: Members of Congress have repeatedly introduced bills to ensure the federal employees who control air traffic and conduct airport security screenings get paid during government shutdowns. The Keep America Flying Act. The Keep Air Travel Safe Act. The Aviation Funding Stability Act. None passed in time to keep essential aviation workers from missing paychecks. President Donald Trump on Friday offered a short-term fix for the empty pockets of TSA agents who have gone unpaid since funding lapsed for the Department of Homeland Security in mid-February. Labor unions, airline executives and industry groups are urging Congress to provide a permanent solution by acting on any of the pending pay-protection bills with bipartisan support on paper.

Some familiar names to the Supreme Court in a death row case over racial bias in jury makeup

SUMMARY: Some names will be familiar to the Supreme Court in the latest case involving a Black death row inmate from Mississippi. One is Doug Evans, a now-retired prosecutor with a history of dismissing Black jurors for discriminatory reasons. He knocked all but one Black person off the jury in the case set for arguments Tuesday. State Judge Joseph Loper allowed those juror challenges. And the state Supreme Court upheld the conviction. Just seven years ago, in a case involving the same prosecutor, trial judge and state high court, the Supreme Court overturned a different conviction and death sentence because of what Justice Brett Kavanaugh described as a “relentless, determined effort to rid the jury of Black individuals.”

Hacked hospitals, hidden spyware: Iran conflict shows how digital fight is ingrained in warfare

SUMMARY: Iran has turned to its cyber operations to make up for its military disadvantages in its conflict with Israel and the U.S. Since the war began last month, hackers supporting Iran have launched thousands of cyberattacks on companies and organizations in both the U.S. and Israel, seeking to undermine the war effort and critical supply chains. Hospitals and health care organizations have been targeted, as well as data centers. Iran is also using artificial intelligence to generate bogus images of the war. These operations haven't yet had a huge impact, but they demonstrate how disinformation, AI and hacking are now ingrained in modern warfare.

'No Kings' rallies draw crowds across US, in Europe. Springsteen headlines Minnesota demonstration

SUMMARY: Tens of thousands of people joined “No Kings” protests across the U.S. and in Europe against the war in Iran and President Donald Trump’s actions. Minnesota took center stage Saturday because of its resistance to Trump's aggressive immigration enforcement. Thousands of demonstrators stood packed shoulder-to-shoulder on the Minnesota Capitol lawn and surrounding streets in St. Paul. The event’s headliner was Bruce Springsteen, who sang “Streets of Minneapolis” to honor Minnesota's resistance and two residents shot to death by federal agents. Washington, New York, London, Paris and Rome had protests, but there also were rallies in smaller cities and towns. One spokesperson for Trump's Republican Party derided the events as “Hate America Rallies.” The protests were mostly peaceful.

SUMMARY: Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has positioned himself as the grassroots favorite in the runoff election to determine the party's Senate nominee. The election is May 26 and Paxton is trying to unseat John Cornyn. Paxton is drawing praise from right-wing activists who are attending the Conservative Political Action Conference near Dallas. How the Homeland Security deal unraveled and split Republican leaders in Congress

SUMMARY: There seemed to be a deal. Senators appeared to have finally reached an agreement to fund most of the Department of Homeland Security and effectively end a partial government shutdown that's dragged on for more than a month. But then it quickly collapsed after House Speaker Mike Johnson dismissed the deal as a “joke.” His criticism amounted to a denunciation of a deal that his counterpart, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, had orchestrated. The misalignment between the two Republican leaders is a sign of the difficulty ahead for Republicans as they try to maneuver President Donald Trump’s priorities through Congress.

Extreme weather in Afghanistan leaves 17 people dead, authorities say

SUMMARY: Afghan authorities say that severe flooding, a landslide and thunderstorms in parts of Afghanistan have left 17 people dead and 26 injured over the last 24 hours. The casualties are the latest from extreme weather in Afghanistan this year. The number could increase as crews from the country’s National Disaster Management Authority survey the affected areas, the authority’s spokesman Yousuf Hammad said in a statement Sunday. Fundora retains WBC super welterweight title with 6th-round KO of Thurman

SUMMARY: Sebastian Fundora easily retained his WBC super welterweight champion, knocking out Keith Thurman at 1:17 of the sixth round. Referee Thomas Taylor stopped Saturday night's fight after Fundora battered Thurman repeatedly, the former unified welterweight champion's bloody face showing the damage. The 6-foot-5 Fundora (24-1-1, 16 knockouts) used his nine-inch height and reach advantage to pepper Thurman (31-2, 23 KOs) with a series of hard lefts and combinations. Thurman managed to get into the occasional blow, but had to pick his spots.
