What to know about Trump's order to pay TSA officers and its impact on airport security lines

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to pay Transportation Security Administration officers. Whether that translates into shorter wait times for passengers at airport security lines remains to be seen. Friday's signing comes at a busy travel time of the year with spring breaks at school districts and colleges and the upcoming Passover and Easter holidays. Some passengers with very early flights Saturday reported having little problem getting through airport security lines. But that may have been an anomaly. Others at some of the busiest airports wrote on social media that security lines were growing exponentially longer by the hour.

Bills to pay FAA and TSA workers during shutdowns get introduced but keep stalling in Congress

SUMMARY: Members of Congress have repeatedly introduced bills to ensure the federal employees who control air traffic and conduct airport security screenings get paid during government shutdowns. The Keep America Flying Act. The Keep Air Travel Safe Act. The Aviation Funding Stability Act. None passed in time to keep essential aviation workers from missing paychecks. President Donald Trump on Friday offered a short-term fix for the empty pockets of TSA agents who have gone unpaid since funding lapsed for the Department of Homeland Security in mid-February. Labor unions, airline executives and industry groups are urging Congress to provide a permanent solution by acting on any of the pending pay-protection bills with bipartisan support on paper.

Hawaii to take over aging dam after failure scare during flood evacuations

SUMMARY: Hawaii is taking control of the aging Wahiawa Dam after floodwaters pushed it to near-failure and prompted mass evacuations. The state land board voted Friday to acquire key parcels from Dole Food Company. That clears the way for state-led repairs and a bigger spillway that could cost at least $20 million. Officials call the dam a high hazard because failure could kill people downstream. The danger spikes during heavy rain. Evacuation orders lifted Saturday after water levels dropped. Residents support the takeover but plan to watch closely. One board member voted no.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol says the crash involved a Tennessee Department of Transportation dump truck, a Chevrolet Trailblazer and the school bus. The crash happened at about noon Friday on Highway 70 in Carroll County. Officials say the school bus was carrying students and employees from Kenwood Middle School in Clarksville for a field trip to Jackson, Tennessee. The cause of the crash is under investigation. SUMMARY: Savannah Guthrie will return to NBC's “Today” show on April 6. The longtime morning show co-anchor has been absent since her mother's disappearance nearly two months ago. Guthrie says in an interview that aired Friday that experiencing joy will be her protest. Guthrie talked with Hoda Kotb, who has been filling in for her in emotional interviews released this week. Guthrie says she's not sure she's up for it but wants to try because NBC, too, is her family. Frustrated travelers hear a new message from airports: Don’t get here so early

SUMMARY: The sight of travelers suffering through long security lines at U.S. airports this week have many people showing up way before their flights. But now some airports where the wait times have been manageable despite the partial government shutdown are telling travelers to stop arriving so early. In Ohio, John Glenn International Airport in Columbus says the early birds are only making things worse. The airport says getting there too early can create longer lines and says it’s better to space out arrival times to keep the lines moving smoothly. That’s welcome news for some travelers. But many wait times at airport security checkpoints remain unpredictable with long lines.

Nerdeen Kiswani, co-founder of the group Within Our Lifetime, says she was informed by an FBI official late Thursday that there was “a threat on my life." She says she was told that the man had been apprehended. Organizers say more than 3,100 events have been registered in all 50 states and several other countries, with more than 9 million people expected. Protesters moved into the national Mall in Washington, and there were demonstrations in Europe. US lawmakers say they'll visit Taiwan before Trump's summit with China's Xi

SUMMARY: A bipartisan group of senators has plans to visit Taiwan, Japan and South Korea. Their aim is to bolster U.S. alliances that are seen as important to countering China. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen announced the trip Saturday. The New Hampshire Democrat will be joined by Republicans John Curtis of Utah and Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Democrat Jacky Rosen of Nevada. Their visits to Taipei, Tokyo and Seoul are coming before President Donald Trump’s trip to Beijing in May for a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The senators' stop in Taiwan could draw scrutiny from China. Beijing sees such U.S. ties as a challenge to China's claim of sovereignty over the self-governing island.

Trump has long supported UFC and during his 2024 campaign, he used those ties to attract voters who weren't traditionally politically engaged. The sport aligns with Trump's brawling, no-holds-barred style of politics. SUMMARY: There seemed to be a deal. Senators appeared to have finally reached an agreement to fund most of the Department of Homeland Security and effectively end a partial government shutdown that's dragged on for more than a month. But then it quickly collapsed after House Speaker Mike Johnson dismissed the deal as a “joke.” His criticism amounted to a denunciation of a deal that his counterpart, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, had orchestrated. Trump's conflicting messages sow confusion over the Iran war

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump describes the war with Iran as a success, even as his message about the conflict keeps shifting. Trump says the United States is winning even as he sends more troops to the Middle East. He blames other countries for not helping the American effort, then says he doesn't need their assistance. He's delayed deadlines for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. And he's sent mixed signals about how much the closure of the vital waterway matters. Once a luxury for moms, doula care is going mainstream

SUMMARY: Doulas provide physical and emotional support before, during and after birth. Such care used to be seen as a luxury and was available only to those who could afford it. But now, doulas are becoming mainstream. Insurance coverage is growing fast, making their services more available to parents from across the economic spectrum. More than 30 states reimburse doulas through Medicaid or are in the process of implementing such coverage. And private insurers are starting to do the same. Without insurance, costs vary widely but can exceed $2,000. One big reason for the change is that mounting research shows doulas improve health outcomes for moms and babies, including the most vulnerable ones.

He suddenly couldn't speak in space. NASA astronaut says his medical scare remains a mystery

SUMMARY: The astronaut who prompted NASA's first medical evacuation earlier this year says doctors still don't know why he suddenly fell sick at the International Space Station. Four-time space flier Mike Fincke said in an interview with The Associated Press on Friday that he was eating dinner after prepping for a spacewalk the next day when he went into distress. He couldn't talk and remembers no pain. The medical episode lasted 20 minutes and he felt fine afterward. The 59-year-old Fincke says doctors have ruled out a heart attack, he wasn’t choking, but everything else is on the table and could be related to his 549 days of weightlessness.

Tiger Woods released on bail hours after arrest at crash scene on suspicion of DUI

SUMMARY: Officials say Tiger Woods has been released on bail hours after he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Officials say his Land Rover clipped a truck and rolled onto its side. The sheriff's office says he was released from jail late Friday. Florida law required that he spend at least eight hours in jail before he could post bail. He was not injured in the crash. Sheriff John Budensiek says Woods had been traveling at “high speeds” on a residential road and after the crash showed “signs of impairment." Woods’ manager at Excel Sports did not immediately respond to a text message seeking comment.
