Wait just a second: No. 16 Michigan catches second-chance Hail Mary, survives scare vs WMU

ANN ABOR, Mich. (AP) — Given an unlikely second chance at a game-ending Hail Mary, Bryce Underwood connected with JJ Buchanan for a 47-yard touchdown pass that lifted No. 16 Michigan over Western Michigan 13-12. The Wolverines were 27 1/2-point favorites in coach Kyle Whittingham’s debut. The Broncos thought they’d secured a historic upset when Underwood’s first Hail Mary sailed out of bounds with the clock expired. WMU players were already on the field celebrating when officials called for a review. TV replays showed the clock hitting zero before the ball hit the hands of a Western Michigan defender, but officials ruled there was a second left.

Lane Kiffin's debut at LSU delayed by lightning as Tigers move ahead without NFL signees

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The much-anticipated first game of the Lane Kiffin era at LSU was delayed by lightning and did not include two former NFL signees whose ongoing effort to return to college football has brought a lot of attention — and no shortage of criticism — upon the Tigers’ lightning-rod coach. Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris were left off the roster in advance of Saturday night’s game against Clemson in Tiger Stadium. The move to leave Wright and Harris off the roster avoided —- or perhaps just delayed — a confrontation with the Southeastern Conference, which had passed a rule banning players who’d signed with NFL teams, only to see that rule put on hold by a court in Louisiana.

Zheng Qinwen makes big US Open comeback. Naomi Osaka joins her in the fourth round

NEW YORK (AP) — Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen has extended her return to the U.S. Open with a spectacular and stunning rally, winning the final seven games to eliminate No. 22 Madison Keys 1-6, 7-6 (3), 7-5. Taylor Fritz and Amanda Anisimova, like Keys past runners-up at the U.S. Open, also were knocked out. Naomi Osaka ralled from a third-set deficit to defeat Elise Mertens and move on to the fourth round. Top-seeded Alexander Zverev was set to play in the nightcap

Moore throws for 3 TDs and No. 2 Oregon overcomes a slow start to beat Boise State 34-27

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Dante Moore threw for 378 yards and three touchdowns, and the No. 2 Oregon Ducks overcame a slow start to down resilient Boise State 34-27 in the season opener for both teams. After trading field goals to tie the game at 27 in the fourth quarter, Dakorien Moore scored on a 62-yard reception to give the Ducks the lead with 7:51 left and Oregon held on for the victory. Oregon has won 16 straight season openers at Autzen Stadium.

Week 1 gets its signature moment when No. 16 Michigan beats Western Michigan on disputed finish

And to think, Kyle Whittingham said he wanted to put an end to all the drama around Michigan. Nobody could have scripted a more dramatic finish to the former Utah coach’s Michigan debut. No. 16 Michigan beat Western Michigan 13-12 on Saturday only after it was ruled that a second remained following Bryce Underwood’s unsuccessful Hail Mary attempt, even though the scoreboard clock indicated no time was left. Given a second chance, Underwood and JJ Buchanan connected on a remarkable 47-yard touchdown.

Cardinals, Rockies players tilt caps a day after umpire Eddings' comments to St. Louis rookie

DENVER (AP) — Players from St. Louis and Colorado tilted their caps Saturday night in apparent protest of umpire Doug Eddings one day after he instructed Cardinals rookie pitcher Hancel Rincon to straighten his hat. Eddings’ comments prompted an argument with St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol that led to Marmol’s ejection. Most of the Cardinals’ players had their hats tilted during pregame warmups, and many continued to tilt them in the dugout during the game. Some even tilted their batting helmets to celebrate reaching base. At least some Colorado players also wore their caps to the side before the game.

Josh Hoover shined in his Hoosiers debut, and he made it look gritty with a busted nose

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Quarterback Josh Hoover came to Indiana knowing that in coach Curt Cignetti’s program, toughness isn’t optional. He looked the picture of Hoosier grit as Indiana’s new starter Saturday. He threw four touchdown passes, had only three incompletions, finished with no turnovers and delivered an indelible image during Saturday’s 52-16 victory over North Texas that is a lock to make this season’s highlights — his bloodied face and chin strap, after an opponent yanked hard on his facemask.

Jeremiah Smith flashes Heisman pose in Ohio State's warmup for showdown with Texas

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Jeremiah Smith had eight receptions for 151 yards and struck a Heisman pose after his second touchdown during top-ranked Ohio State’s 56-3 victory over Ball State. He became the third receiver since 2015 from a Power Four conference to have at least two games with at least 150 receiving yards and two touchdowns in one half. DeVonta Smith had four at Alabama and Ja’Marr Chase did it three times at LSU. Smith did not play during the second half with next week’s matchup with fifth-ranked Texas looming.

Arch Manning throws four TD passes and No. 5 Texas eases past Texas State in season opener 59-7

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Arch Manning passed for 305 yards four touchdowns, including two to Cam Coleman, and No. 5 Texas eased into the season with a 59-7 win over Texas State. Graceson Littleton’s 59-yard fumble return touchdown put Texas ahead 28-0 in the second quarter. Coleman played his first two seasons at Auburn and was one of the top transfers in the country when he signed with Texas. Transfer running back Raleek Brown scored two touchdowns for Texas. The Longhorns host No. 1 Ohio State next week.

Marcel Reed sparks No. 8 Texas A&M in a 50-0 rout of Missouri State

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) — Marcel Reed threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns in just over three quarters to help No. 8 Texas A&M roll to a 50-0 win over Missouri State. Reed was replaced by Brady Hart with about 13 minutes left and the Aggies up 40-0. Isaiah Horton had four receptions for 76 yards. His first catch as an Aggie was a 15-yard grab for a touchdown on the opening possession. The Aggies thoroughly dominated despite not playing their best at times. Missouri State, which is in its second season in the FBS, was outgained 505-67 and had just four first downs to 35 by Texas A&M.
