Brewers withstand Rays' comeback attempt to win 3-2 in Game 1 of World Series

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Trevor Megill struck out Jonny DeLuca with runners on second and third to wiggle out of a ninth-inning jam as the Milwaukee Brewers escaped with a 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1 of the World Series. DeLuca’s strikeout came after Tampa Bay’s Liam Hicks had grounded into an apparent game-ending double play that was overturned after a video review. Replays determined Brewers shortstop Cooper Pratt’s right foot was slightly off the bag when he reached to catch a high throw from second baseman Brice Turang. Jacob Misiorowski allowed one run over five innings to earn the win.

Brewers' Jacob Misiorowski sets World Series velocity record on his first pitch

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Jacob Misiorowski broke the record for fastest World Series pitch with the very first offering of this year’s Fall Classic, a 103.5 mph fastball from the Milwaukee Brewers’ fireballer to the Tampa Bay Rays’ Yandy Díaz. Misiorowski allowed one run and four hits over five innings with three strikeouts, leaving with a 2-1 lead. Misiorowski’s first pitch, taken for a ball above the strike zone, was listed at 103.4 mph on the stadium video boards but clocked at 103.5 by MLB’s Statcast system. Aroldis Chapman of the Chicago Cubs had set the mark for a Series pitcher at 103.2 mph in 2016.

Pitcher Brandon Woodruff makes Brewers' World Series roster as he returns from shoulder injury

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Brandon Woodruff has made the Milwaukee Brewers’ World Series roster without having pitched in a game over the last 3½ months. Woodruff took the place of Chad Patrick on Milwaukee’s 13-man pitching staff as the Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays submitted their World Series rosters Friday before playing Game 1 in Milwaukee. This is the latest step in a remarkable comeback for Woodruff. The two-time All-Star had expected to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery over the summer. The 33-year-old instead gets a chance to pitch in the World Series for the first time.

Robin Yount and Brewers' broadcast team pay tribute to Bob Uecker by borrowing from his wardrobe

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Hall of Famer Robin Yount honored Bob Uecker by wearing one of the beloved Milwaukee Brewers broadcaster’s plaid sport coats before throwing out the first pitch prior to Game 1 of the World Series against the Tampa Bay Rays. Uecker’s presence also was all over the radio broadcast room named in his honor as the Brewers played their first World Series game since 1982. Each member of the Brewers radio crew also wore a plaid blazer that had been part of Uecker’s wardrobe. Uecker died in January 2025 at the age of 90 after broadcasting Brewers games for 54 years.

Players in WNBA Finals tuning out President Trump, other outside noise, say their focus on the games

ATLANTA (AP) — Players in the WNBA Finals say they are focused on the upcoming game and not President Trump’s comments about the national anthem. Trump spoke a rally on Thursday in Iowa and criticized players for leaving the court before the national anthem is played. It has been part of WNBA players' pregame routine for several years, dating back to at least when they played an entire season in Florida in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic. Teams have left before the anthem is played to raise awareness for social justice issues or simply to continue to get ready for the game. When asked Friday about the president's comments, Atlanta and Golden State players who are competing for the WNBA championship said they were locked in on the next game, not the president's comments.

Union head calls MLB's salary cap proposal 'nuclear bomb' ahead of World Series opener

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Baseball’s union chief said the owners’ proposal of a salary cap this summer was a “nuclear bomb” and players have no interest in the type of economic system Commissioner Rob Manfred maintains is needed for the sport to thrive. Shortly before the Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays opened the first World Series in 35 years between small-payroll teams in the bottom half of big league spending, players’ association head Bruce Meyer and Manfred held separate media sessions Friday near the first base dugout at American Family Field.

Knicks say using championship rings in an email to fool employees was an 'unfortunate mistake'

NEW YORK (AP) — Madison Square Garden says an email that led employees to believe they were selecting a Knicks championship ring but instead was a phishing attempt was an “unfortunate mistake.” The company added Friday that more than 275 players and employees will still be getting rings as planned. Knicks players received the rings they earned by winning the NBA championship on Tuesday night. On Thursday, The Athletic reported that in September, MSG employees received an email reading: “Congratulations, your Employee Championship Ring is here.” Those who clicked on the link at the bottom of the email were forced to attend a mandatory cybersecurity class.
