Spain star Lamine Yamal scores 10 minutes into his first start at the World Cup
SUMMARY: Lamine Yamal needed just 10 minutes of his first start at a World Cup to get his first goal on soccer’s biggest stage. The 18-year-old forward slid in at the far post to touch home a low cross and put Spain 1-0 up against Saudi Arabia in Atlanta on Sunday. Yamal missed the end of the season with a hamstring injury and was used as a second half substitute when Spain was held to a surprise 0-0 draw against Cape Verde in its opening match. Whether Barcelona star Yamal would start the next game was the biggest talking point ahead of Saudi Arabia and coach Luis de la Fuente gave Spain fans what they wanted. That move quickly paid off with Yamal’s early strike.

‘Have faith’: Vozinha’s mom speaks out as Cape Verde heads back to World Cup field
SUMMARY: Sunday is Father’s Day. Except, perhaps, for Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha. The feel-good story of the World Cup will be back on the field Sunday, when Cape Verde takes on Uruguay in the second group-stage match for both teams. And Vozinha, whose name is Josimar José Évora Dias, will have his mother in the stands for that match; she was unable to attend Cape Verde’s stunning opening draw against Spain because she couldn’t obtain a visa. Ana Candida Evora is here now, though — making Cape Verde’s story even better.

GLF--US OPEN
Wyndham Clark chases another US Open title barring another Sunday surprise at Shinnecock
SUMMARY: Wyndham Clark heads into the final round of the U.S. Open with a six-shot lead, a margin never lost in the tournament’s history. The last time someone failed to win with a five-shot lead was 107 years ago. The USGA also stands to win if the event avoids past issues. Shinnecock Hills has been challenging in previous Opens, with unplayable conditions in 2004 and 2018. This year, the course has been more manageable. The final round could see Clark become the first wire-to-wire champion since 2014. Or perhaps it could be Scottie Scheffler getting the career Grand Slam.

Argentina may have America to thank for Lionel Messi’s latest World Cup heroics
SUMMARY: Lionel Messi’s move to America will look like a masterstroke if he leads Argentina to back-to-back World Cup titles. His decision to join Inter Miami in 2023 has already been good for all parties, raising the profile of soccer in the United States, delivering titles for his club and writing a new chapter in his storied career. But Argentina could be the biggest winner of all, with Messi arriving at what might be his last World Cup with his powers still at stratospheric levels aged 38.
