BKN--NBA FINALS-TRUMP

NYC imposes stringent security as Trump becomes 1st sitting US president to attend NBA Finals game

SUMMARY: Donald Trump is set to be the first sitting U.S. president to attend an NBA Finals game. Trump is expected to be at Madison Square Garden on Monday night for Game 3 between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs. Trump’s appearance led the New York Police Department and Secret Service to cancel a watch party outside and institute a no-bag policy for ticket holders. Mayor Zohran Mamdani is also expected to be there. The Knicks are in the finals for the first time since 1999, lead the series two games to none and are two wins from their first championship since 1973.

FBC--TEXAS TECH-SORSBY GAMBLING

Brendan Sorsby gets injunction vs. NCAA and could play for Texas Tech after gambling ineligibility

SUMMARY: Brendan Sorsby has been granted a temporary injunction against the NCAA. The ruling could clear the way for him to play for Texas Tech this fall, even after the transfer quarterback was declared ineligible for wagering on college sports. Some of those bets were made on his own team while at Indiana. The ruling Monday by Senior Judge Ken Curry immediately prevents the NCAA from being able to block Sorsby’s eligibility for what will be his final college season. The NCAA can appeal to a higher court in Texas, though there was no immediate word on if or when that would happen, or the possible timeline for a different ruling.

HKN--STANLEY CUP-PLAYOFF BABY BOOM

Hurricanes experience a playoff baby boom, Golden Knights could join in amid wild Stanley Cup Final

SUMMARY: The Carolina Hurricanes are experiencing a playoff baby boom in their push to the Stanley Cup Final, and the Vegas Golden Knights could join them. Hurricanes defensemen K’Andre Miller, Sean Walker and Jalen Chatfield have welcomed new children during the playoffs going back to early May. That has made for a memorable ride between the life-changing event at home and reaching the Cup final. The Golden Knights have multiple players with new arrivals scheduled for this month, too. That raises the potential for arrivals amid a series that could run through a Game 7 on June 17.

SOC--DENMARK-ERIKSEN COLLAPSE

Eriksen ‘doing well’ and expected to leave the hospital after on-field collapse, Denmark team says

SUMMARY: Denmark’s national team physician says Christian Eriksen is “in good spirits” and expected to leave the hospital soon after collapsing on the field again. The 34-year-old Eriksen clutched his chest with both hands before dropping to the ground in the 65th minute of Denmark’s international friendly against Ukraine in Odense, Denmark, on Sunday. The Danish soccer federation said the midfielder walked off the field by himself after being attended by medical staff and underwent more tests at a hospital. In an statement from the federation, team physician Morten Boesen says: “I spoke with Christian this morning, and he is doing well.” Boesen says Eriksen “is with his family and is in good spirits. The expectation is that he will be discharged soon and can return home.”

SOC--WCUP-IRAN-SCHOOL VICTIMS

Iran’s World Cup players wear pins for victims of deadly strike on school as they arrive in Mexico

SUMMARY: Iran’s World Cup team arrived in Mexico wearing lapel pins highlighting the victims of a deadly missile strike on an elementary school at the start of the war in the Mideast. The players wore gold-colored pins with the number “168” on their jackets when getting off their plane Sunday in Tijuana, Mexico. It referred to the people killed, most of them children, when a Feb. 28 strike, likely launched by the U.S., hit the school in southern Iran. Iran’s embassy in Hungary on Monday noted the pins in a social media post. The strike on the school was previously memorialized by the Iran team before a warmup game in March in Antalya, Turkey.

SOC--WCUP-POLITICAL TENSION

FIFA and Infantino draw bipartisan skepticism ahead of the World Cup

SUMMARY: FIFA President Gianni Infantino recently addressed U.S. city leaders, joking about soccer “conquering” America as the World Cup approaches. Infantino’s relationship with President Donald Trump is strong, but skepticism about FIFA spans political lines. Many leaders criticize FIFA for corruption and elitism. The World Cup is being co-hosted by the U.S., Mexico and Canada and starts this week. The tournament coincides with the Republican president’s efforts to enhance his image through sports events. The 48-team tournament also highlights America’s political divide, with differing views on immigration and national pride. Despite tensions, some Americans hope the event will unite people across political and cultural lines. FIFA hasn’t responded to a request for comment.

BBO--THIS WEEK IN BASEBALL

Judge’s injury gives the Yankees an unwelcome challenge, while Skubal’s return could boost Tigers

SUMMARY: The reigning MVP and Cy Young Award winners in the American League are both on the injured list. One is on his way back, the other went on the IL just in the last few days. Aaron Judge has a stress fracture in a rib that will keep the slugging outfielder out of the lineup for the New York Yankees for a while. The Detroit Tigers have been without ace Tarik Skubal for over a month, but he threw five innings in a rehab appearance for Class A West Michigan on Sunday.

BKN--NBA FINALS-NEW YORK SCENE

Spurs-Knicks Game 3 of the NBA Finals is a hot ticket with the potential for a wild scene

SUMMARY: Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden is a hot ticket with the get-in price exceeding the average cost of rent in the biggest U.S. city. The cheapest upper-deck seats available were going for over $6,000 on secondary markets like StubHub, SeatGeek and VividSeats. Knicks fever has taken over with the team in the finals for the first time since 1999 and now up 2-0 after winning its 13th game in row during this playoff run. Even if a watch party outside the arena was canceled by President Donald Trump’s anticipated appearance, plenty more are planned around New York’s five boroughs.

SOC--WCUP-FAN FESTS

A floating pitch, Motley Crue and merch: Fan fests extend the World Cup experience beyond the games

SUMMARY: If those expensive tickets to World Cup matches are out of reach, there are still options to commune with fellow fans while watching the games. From a floating pitch to Motley Crue, the World Cup fan festivals have something for everyone in addition to the soccer. As is the custom for the World Cup, the 16 cities across Canada, Mexico and the United States that are hosting games will all have fanfests, or fan zones. The Associated Press counted some 78 fan fests sanctioned by the FIFA host city organizing committees. But there are many more.
