RAC--WOMEN OF THE KENTUCKY DERBY

At the track, on the air and behind the scenes, women make the Kentucky Derby happen

SUMMARY: The Kentucky Oaks moving to prime time Friday is putting the best 3-year-old fillies in the spotlight under the lights. But from Donna Brothers and Britney Eurton on television to Lindsay Schanzer producing behind the scenes, Kentucky Derby week has many women making the race happen. On the track, Cherie DeVeaux has the chance to be the first woman to train a Derby winner and just the second in any Triple Crown race. Katie Tolbert also has a huge hand in Commandment’s preparation as an exercise rider for Brad Cox.

RAC--KENTUCKY DERBY-FRIDAY CHANGES

Robusta is in the Kentucky Derby field with Right to Party out

SUMMARY: Cristian Torres is getting the chance to ride in his first Kentucky Derby after all. The jockey looked to be out of luck after Silent Tactic was scratched earlier this week, but another change in the field gave him a reprieve. Kenny McPeek-trained Right to Party was scratched on Friday, less than 36 hours before post time, putting Doug O’Neill’s Robusta in off the also-eligible list. O’Neill tapped Torres for the mount because Emisael Jaramillo was already booked to ride at Santa Anita Park in California on Saturday.

SOC--WCUP TICKETS

Exorbitantly expensive tickets for early World Cup games still on general sale

SUMMARY: Tickets for most of the World Cup group games remain on general sale with just over a month to go until the tournament kicks off on June 11. But prices are exorbitantly high. They top out at $4,105 for the United States’ opening game against Paraguay in Los Angeles and many cost around $2,000. Tickets are still available on FIFA’s official website through its “last-minute sales” section after batches had been released through various phases since September.

BKN--TIMBERWOLVES ADVANCE

Jaden McDaniels and the feisty Timberwolves oust the Nuggets and move on to meet the Spurs

SUMMARY: The Minnesota Timberwolves had plenty of lulls during the regular season while struggling to recapture the form that fueled them to consecutive Western Conference finals appearances over the last two years. The postseason switch was flipped against the rival Denver Nuggets as the players promised all along. The energy and urgency was never greater than in the series-clinching Game 6 victory when the determined Timberwolves shook off the absence of their three best guards and beat the Nuggets 110-98. Jaden McDaniels led the way on offense and defense with Anthony Edwards, Donte DiVincenzo and Ayo Dosunmu all out.

CAR--INDYCAR-PALOU-CONTRACT EXTENSION

Alex Palou lands a multi-year Ganassi contract extension after a banner week at Indy

SUMMARY: Since joining Chip Ganassi Racing six seasons ago, Spanish driver Alex Palou has shown to be a generational talent who is quickly working his way through IndyCar’s record books. For that, Palou has earned a multi-year contract extension on his current deal that ran through the 2027 season. The extension was finalized following this week’s two-day Indianapolis 500 test. Ganassi never publicly discloses contract terms. The reward capped a celebratory week for Palou, who drove into Indianapolis Motor Speedway as the defending Indy 500 winner for testing and saw a larger-than-life banner of himself chugging the traditional winner’s milk.

SOC--WCUP-MEXICO-BORN IN THE USA

4 US-born players could be in the mix for Mexico’s World Cup roster

SUMMARY: Mexico’s World Cup roster could owe more than a little bit to its northern neighbor. The country has already had Mexican-American players on previous World Cup squads, but as many as four who were born and developed in the United States could be suiting up for El Tri in 2026. Brian Gutierrez could be joined on the Mexican squad by Chivas teammate Richy Ledezma, who was born in Phoenix, as well as Obed Vargas, a native of Anchorage, Alaska, and Julián Araujo, a native of Lompoc, California.

BKL--FEVER-CLARK’S HOMECOMING

Caitlin Clark scores 21 points, gives the Fever a brief scare in her 1st home game in 9 months

SUMMARY: Caitlin Clark’s first home game in more than nine months was supposed to be a celebration. Instead, she gave the Indiana Fever and fans a scare. Clark crumpled to the ground early in the third quarter when Dallas forward Alanna Smith collided with her leg on a shot attempt, and then limped toward the bench as she walked off the injury during a replay review that resulted in a Flagrant 1 call. The two-time All-Star then made two free throws before departing and watching the rest of the game from the bench. She finished with 21 points in a 95-80 loss to the Dallas Wings. Paige Bueckers scored 20 points in 20 minutes in a game featuring the WNBA’s last two Rookie of the Year Award winners.

BKN--NUGGETS-JOKIC

Jokic still wants to be ‘Nuggets forever,’ but an early playoff exit leaves them searching for more

SUMMARY: Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets are three years removed from their NBA championship. The peak is looking awfully distant for the team from the Mile High City and the three-time MVP award winner. The Nuggets were ousted in six games by the Minnesota Timberwolves in their first-round series and failed to play in May for the first time in four years. Jokic had 28 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds in the 110-98 loss at Minnesota in Game 6. Jokic said he still wants to “be Nuggets forever” when asked about signing a contract extension this summer.
