CAR--INDYCAR-INDY 500

Rain delays opening day for Indianapolis 500 as Kanaan awaits approval to be Larson’s replacement

SUMMARY: The first day of practice for the 109th Indianapolis 500 has been delayed by rain, causing a disruption to Tuesday’s schedule at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The day was supposed to begin with a two-hour window for Arrow McLaren team principal Tony Kanaan to run a veteran refresher course in case he’s needed to substitute for NASCAR star Kyle Larson, who is attempting to run both the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on May 25. The rain in Indianapolis delayed all on-track activity, so IndyCar is expected to go to full field practice if weather permits. Kanaan will have to complete the refresher course at a later time.

GLF--PGA CHAMPIONSHIP-THOMAS

Justin Thomas returns to the site of his first major win, looking for third career PGA Championship

SUMMARY: Justin Thomas has positioned himself to turn back the clock at the PGA Championship. The resurgent Thomas returns to Quail Hollow this week looking to recapture some of the magic that led to his first major at the 2017 PGA Championship when he posted a two-shot victory over Francesco Molinari, Louis Oosthuizen and Patrick Reed. The 32-year-old Thomas finally appears to have his game back on track following a years-long slump. He’s finished tied for second or better in three of his last four tournaments, including a playoff win last month at the RBC Heritage that snapped a three-year winless drought on the PGA Tour.

US--OLYMPIC MEDALIST-ARREST

Wrestling gold medalist Kyle Snyder charged in prostitution sting

SUMMARY: Police in Ohio say Olympic wrestling gold medalist Kyle Snyder was arrested in a prostitution sting. Snyder is one of the most successful wrestlers in U.S. history and in 2016 became the youngest American wrestler to win Olympic gold. He followed that up with a silver at the Tokyo Games. Court records in Ohio say Snyder was charged with engaging in prostitution after he was arrested in Columbus on Friday. Messages seeking comment from Snyder were not immediately returned on Tuesday. Just last week, the new Real American Freestyle wrestling league announced it had added Snyder to it’s lineup.

HKN--PANTHERS-CIFU

Panthers vice chairman Doug Cifu suspended by NHL over comments on social media

SUMMARY: The NHL has suspended Florida Panthers vice chairman and alternate governor Doug Cifu from any involvement with the team or the league, doing so in response to inappropriate posts on Cifu’s now-shuttered social media account. Cifu, in posts on X, got into a back-and-forth with a Toronto fan on Sunday night, the fan starting the exchange by comparing hits by Florida players in this ongoing series against the Maple Leafs to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. The league says “the NHL has concluded that Mr. Cifu’s X posts were unacceptable and inappropriate.”

GLF--ON THE FRINGE-GRAND SLAM

Golf waited 25 years for the latest career Grand Slam. How long will the next one take?

SUMMARY: Now that Rory McIlroy completed the career Grand Slam with his Masters victory, the question becomes who might be next. Jordan Spieth is the obvious answer because all he needs is the PGA Championship. It was different when Tiger Woods won the career slam at 24 in 2000 because no one else had more than two majors. Now it’s Spieth and 54-year-old Phil Mickelson, who needs the U.S. Open. If not Spieth now, what the next three majors could provide is a chance for Jon Rahm, Collin Morikawa or Xander Schauffele to join the list of players on the cusp. SUMMARY: Novak Djokovic is splitting with coach Andy Murray, just two weeks ahead of the French Open. The decision comes after Djokovic lost his opening match in his last two tournaments, both on clay. Both players thanked each other following a six-month partnership. Djokovic and Murray joined forces ahead of the Australian Open in what initially was seen as an unlikely pairing. Djokovic has yet to win a tournament since then, leaving him one shy of a 100th title.

SOC--ANCELOTTI-MADRID’S SILENCE

How Carlo Ancelotti’s move from Real Madrid to Brazil got awkward

SUMMARY: Carlo Ancelotti is swapping Real Madrid for Brazil in one of the biggest moves in world soccer. The problem is, neither he, nor Madrid, want to talk about it. As coaching switches go, they don’t come any bigger than this. But when news broke Monday that Ancelotti was leaving the sport’s the most successful and iconic club team to take charge of its most successful and iconic national team, there was an awkward silence. Madrid chose to ignore the announcement by the Brazilian soccer federation and was still to publicly acknowledge it 24 hours later. There was silence, too, from Ancelotti, who didn’t even provide a quote for his new employer when it published its official statement.

SUMMARY: Carlo Ancelotti wants to remain fully focused on his job with Real Madrid before taking over Brazil’s national team in two weeks. Ancelotti was announced as Brazil’s new coach on Monday but is still in charge of Madrid. The club has a Spanish league match against Mallorca on Wednesday. The coach said Tuesday he will not think about his job with Brazil until the Spanish league ends. Former Madrid player Xabi Alonso is widely expected to take over the coaching job after announcing he is leaving Bayer Leverkusen, but the Spanish club has yet to announce Ancelotti’s successor.

US--AP POLL-WOMEN’S SPORTS

About 3 in 10 US adults follow women’s sports, a new AP-NORC poll finds

SUMMARY: A new poll finds about 3 in 10 U.S. adults follow women’s sports at least “somewhat” closely, lower than the share who follow men’s sports. Those who follow women’s pro sports are more casual, tending to say they attend or watch games occasionally rather than frequently. People who follow men’s sports, by contrast, are more likely to identify attachments to teams as opposed to players. The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll comes ahead of the start of the 2025 WNBA season, an expansion year for the league. University of Iowa phenom-turned-WNBA star Caitlin Clark has helped bring wider attention to women’s basketball.

BKN--DRAFT LOTTERY-WELTS

Rick Welts was there in 1985 when the lottery was born. And he was there for a Dallas win Monday

SUMMARY: Rick Welts was there, 40 years to the date earlier, when the NBA draft lottery got started. He worked for the league then and was in the room when that first one took place. And it seems he’s spent much of the four decades since debunking the rumors that the 1985 lottery was rigged so the New York Knicks would get Patrick Ewing, too. Given all the extraordinary measures including witnesses, accountants, video-taping of the event that goes into running such a thing, it’s reasonable to conclude that the 2025 lottery wasn’t fixed, either. But it might fix the Dallas Mavericks.

SUMMARY: Ever since he was a kid, Isiah Kiner-Falefa has heard all about the cousin who was a Hall of Fame slugger for the Pittsburgh Pirates years ago. Now he finally knows kin from Ralph Kiner’s side of the family. In a touching rendezvous Monday at Citi Field, the 30-year-old shortstop greeted Scott Kiner — son of the former Pittsburgh outfielder — before Kiner-Falefa and the Pirates played the New York Mets. Second cousins once removed, the two exchanged hugs and gifts in the Shannon Forde Press Conference Room. An emotional Kiner-Falefa, who grew up in Hawaii, said it was the first time he’d ever met anyone from Ralph Kiner’s part of the clan and something he’d always dreamed about.
