NCAA women’s rules committee proposes coach’s challenge to initiate video review on variety of plays

SUMMARY: The NCAA Women’s Basketball Rules Committee proposed a coach’s challenge be required to initiate a video review of out-of-bounds calls and three other types of plays. The committee voted to recommend the change for the 2025-26 season. Proposals must be approved by the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel. Under the proposal, plays that could be challenged at any point during the game include out-of-bounds calls, backcourt violations, whether a change in team possession occurred before the ruling of a foul where free throws would be involved and whether a foul was assessed to the correct player.

BKC--NCAA RULES-GAME FLOW

Out-of-bounds plays could be reviewed only by coach challenge under NCAA rules panel recommendation

SUMMARY: The NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee has recommended video reviews of out-of-bounds calls only be initiated by coach’s challenge. The committee met this week and addressed concerns about lengthy disruptions, particularly near the end of games. Other than in the last two minutes of a game and overtime, a coach’s challenge also would be necessary to initiate a review of basket interference/goaltending and restricted arc plays. Recent data shows those reviews caused minimal game interruptions. Officials could not initiate video review on out-of-bounds calls at any point in a game. The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel must approve all proposals.

FBN--LIONS-HASSANEIN

1st Egyptian drafted into the NFL, Ahmed Hassanein, takes part in Detroit Lions minicamp

SUMMARY: Ahmed Hassanein remembers the days of learning how to play football in his half-brother’s small kitchen in California. The 6-foot-2, 267-pound former Boise State defensive end, who was the first Egyptian drafted into the NFL last month by Detroit, created a new memory Friday by taking snaps at the Lions rookie minicamp. Hassanein said the experience doesn’t feel real and that he’s so excited he doesn’t want to leave the field. It is hoped that Hassanein will help fill the edge rusher hole that the Lions have opposite Aidan Hutchinson.
