Alex & Shiloh, JFlo to play 1st Saturday this week

Posted

1st Saturday in Downtown Salisbury will feature Alex & Shiloh Band, with a special encore performance from award winning local beatboxer JFlo, on Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m. on the steps of the Government Office Building.

Sponsored by Salisbury Neighborhood Housing Services, 1st Saturday in June, held on North Division Street, will hopefully be the first outdoor event of the season.

“We’ve had some bad luck so far this year with excessive rain,” said Sarah Rayne, co-chair of 1st Saturday. “Hopefully, the rain will hold off. If not, we’ll move indoors, to one of our Downtown partners.”

Check 1st Saturday’s Facebook page for up-to-date information regarding relocation of the event.

Alex & Shiloh are a brother and sister duo who “combine an acoustic guitar, off-the-chart vocals, a bottomless repertoire of cover songs, borderline excessive amounts of sibling love, and original compositions for good measure,” according to their Facebook page. Alex & Shiloh will be accompanied by additional musicians for this performance.

Also performing is JFlo, a nationally-renowned beatbox champion who was launched into the local spotlight after his performance at TEDx SBY earlier this year. JFlo performed during the April 1st Saturday event, and was so impressive that he’s been invited to return for an encore performance.

Alex & Shiloh Band will play from 4 to 7 p.m. JFlo will perform during the set break, from 5:30 to 6 p.m.

During the June 4 event, the Salisbury Jaycees will be selling beer and wine to raise money for their various community projects. Alcohol will only be permitted in the street area, and not on the lawn, which is the spectator area. No alcohol will be permitted to leave the event and no outside alcohol will be allowed into the event.

All attendees are asked to bring a donation for Operation We Care, a locally-based nonprofit organization that sends care packages and supports our military, law enforcement and fire/EMS. A list of the most needed items can be found at www.operationwecare.org. 1st Saturday will collect donations for Operation We Care throughout the entirety of its 2016 season.

This year 1st Saturday will host a different food truck every month for the convenience of its attendees. This month’s food truck is The Polish Connection, offering “wholesome, handmade Old World Polish Food using the recipes passed down from generation to generation,” according to their Facebook page. Downtown restaurants will also be open and offering carry out. Attendees are asked to dispose of their trash in one of the many trash receptacles provided by the City of Salisbury. There will also be receptacles labeled for recycling.

The 1st Saturday Art Market has grown this year, so look for new artists selling locally-made products. Also in the market will be Goatopia, bringing with them some furry friends, and the Art Institute & Gallery, which will set up an art activity for children.

Be sure to stop by the table for this month’s sponsor, Salisbury Neighborhood Housing Services. SNHS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization serving targeted neighborhoods and populations in the City of Salisbury and surrounding areas. Their mission is to facilitate home ownership and community investment opportunities that build pride and confidence among residents and partners and transform City of Salisbury neighborhoods and surrounding areas into thriving attractive communities. Ride your bicycle to 1st Saturday and leave it in the capable hands of Bike SBY, which is offering a free valet service.

Limited edition 2016 1st Saturday T-shirts will be available for $10 each. All proceeds will benefit 1st Saturday’s continued efforts to provide a free monthly music event in Salisbury’s Downtown.

Sponsorships, donations and fundraised money ensure our musical acts are paid for their time. Learn more about our sponsors at www.1stsaturdaysby.com.

New 1st Saturday bumper stickers and magnets will be distributed to attendees for free!

1st Saturday provides a free, family-friendly experience for locals while also promoting local business, tourism growth, and community involvement through music and celebration. The event is an all-volunteer effort, a downtown economic development initiative, and a project of the Salisbury Arts & Entertainment District Committee.
