Music and Baseball – what better combination for a “let’s-welcome-summer-weekend!”

On Saturday and Sunday, you can have just that in Mardela  Springs.

Begin with an afternoon concert by Barren Creek Band on Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m. Bring your lawn chair or blanket and relax on the grounds of Adkins Historical & Museum park at Brattan and Main Streets.

Food will be on sale by the Adkins folks, and the music from Mardela’s own Barren Creek Band will recall the days when the town hosted a wide variety of entertainment on summer evenings. Their music is a combination of classic tunes from the 1950s through the ‘80s, as well as a touch of country.

All proceeds benefit Westside Historical Society’s  educational programs  and  efforts  to  preserve the cultural  traditions of this part of the Lower Shore.

On Sunday, the third-annual living history Vintage Baseball game will pit the Easton Fair Play club against the Elkton Eclipse club.

Both are members of the Mid-Atlantic Vintage Baseball League,  including clubs from  New York and Rhode Island to Maryland and Delaware.

If you have never seen a Civil War-era baseball game, you are in for a truly fun day. The players not only dress in the style of the mid-1800s, they use the same kind of equipment – no they DO NOT use gloves – and play in an open grassy field.

Game One begins about 11 a.m., and two games will be played.

Danny Gessaman, local Civil War re-enactor, will also set up a little camp and be on hand to speak a bit about the life of the soldier in the war.

here will be food for sale and a few small tents set up for shade, though you might want to bring along your own, and bring a blanket or chair.

The game will be played in the field behind the tennis courts on Sharptown Road,. Park near the tennis courts  or in parking lot next to Northwestern Elementary School.

Admission is free, though donations are welcome and help support Westside Historical Society’s mission of preserving and promoting the history and traditions of the area.
