Woodbridge, Smyrna, top football tourney pairings

DOVER – Woodbridge High earned the top seed in Division II while Smyrna took the No. 2 spot in Division I as the DIAA football state tournament brackets were announced on Sunday morning.

Milford (Division II) and Sussex Central (Division I) also earned at-large berths for the tourneys, which begin next weekend.

In both tournaments, the bracket is reshuffled after each round with the highest-remaining seeds hosting the lowest-remaining seeds.

Jamon Kane of Woodbridge goes 65 yards for a touchdown. Woodbridge and Milford are both in the Division II state tournament field.

In the six-team Division I bracket, top-seeded Middletown (10-0) and defending state champion Smyrna (10-0) both received first-round byes and won’t play until the following weekend.

In next week’s Division II matchups, No. 1 Woodbridge will host eighth-seeded Howard (6-4) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. with No. 4 Milford (9-1) hosting fifth-seeded Wilmington Friends (9-1) on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

The other first-round games have No. 2 Glasgow (10-0) hosting No. 7 Caravel (7-3) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. while No. 3 St. Georges (8-2) hosts No. 6 Delaware Military (8-2) on Saturday at 11 a.m.

In Division I, No. 6 Sussex Central (8-2) will travel to No. 3 William Penn (9-1) on Saturday at 1 p.m. No. 4 Salesianum (7-3) hosts No. 5 Concord (7-3) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the other opening-round contest.

Smyrna will host a semifinal game on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 7:30 p.m. with Middletown hosting the other semifinal on Friday, Nov. 25, at 7:30 p.m.

Both state championship games will be played on Saturday, Dec. 3 at Delaware Stadium in Newark. The Division I finals are slated for 1 p.m. while the Division II finals will start at 5:30 p.m.
