Walmart fires cashier accused of assaulting customer

CAMDEN — An 18-year-old Dover man who allegedly assaulted a Walmart customer while working Sunday is no longer employed by the company, a spokesman said.

On Monday Walmart spokesman Casey Steheli referred all other questions to police regarding the arrest of Desmond J. Stevens.

Mr. Stevens was a cashier at the time of the alleged incident that left a 62-year-old customer with an eye injury.

Mr. Stevens allegedly followed a customer (whose name was redacted in court documents) outside after a checkout and punched him several times in the face with a closed fist before being pulled away by Walmart security staff, Camden Police said.

Police said the sequence was captured on surveillance video.

The customer was transported to Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital in Dover for a medical evaluation, police said. An officer said in court documents that blood was seen filling the injured man’s eye.

Mr. Stevens was charged with misdemeanor second-degree assault and released on $5,000 unsecured bond pending a Friday morning appearance in the Kent County Court of Common Pleas in Dover.

Investigation determined that the cashier and customer traded verbal jabs regarding a personal check and requested information to pay for items,

according to police. Mr. Stevens allegedly told the customer “he gets off work at 3 p.m. and will whip his (expletive) outside,” a police officer wrote in an arrest affidavit.

According to police, the 62-year-old man suggested that the then-employee should be more respectful to customers and then exited through a grocery area door.

Time of the alleged offense at 263 Walmart Drive was listed as 3:44 p.m. in an affidavit.

The arrest report did not indicate who contacted police.
