NEWARK- The University of Delaware will be implementing new safety measures on campus starting Wednesday.
The expanded safety escort program, run by the UD Police Department, will be expanded from a walking escort program with the addition of a golf cart that will transport students to on-campus locations, including academic buildings, laboratories, the library and residence halls, during evening hours.
Also, Transportation Services will offer a new shuttle service for students who are traveling from campus to their nearby off-campus residences. The four pick-up points for this service will be the Morris Library, Perkins Student Center, Townsend Hall and the north end of the STAR Health Sciences Building on the STAR Campus.
Both services will be available from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m., seven days a week. The escort program will only be available until the end of the fall semester, according to an article on UDaily. Students can also call 831-RIDE or request a service on the LiveSafe app.
UD is also reevaluating all safety lighting and blue light phone systems throughout the Newark campus for potential additions and upgrades.
UD said they are expanding security services in response to “recent discussions about crime reporting and safety.”
