NEWARK – A University of Delaware football player has been charged with first-degree assault after allegedly hitting a teammate in the team’s locker room on Thursday evening.

According to UD sports information press release, University of Delaware Police say that senior receiver Jerel Harrison “struck another player with a helmet in the football locker room” at around 6:05 p.m. on Thursday. The player was taken to Christiana Hospital, treated for injuries and released.fb14-harrison-wm(mc)

Harrison, from Richmond, Va., was charged and committed to the Howard Young Correctional Facility on $25,000 cash bail. He was also issued a no contact order with the victim and the university, and a trespass warning for the campus.

University students who are arrested are immediately referred to the Office of Student Conduct.

Since the matter involves an ongoing investigation, the university said it would have no comment at this time.

A fifth-year senior, Harrison was expected to be one of the Blue Hens’ top receiver this fall. He has already been taken off the school’s online roster.

A year ago, Harrison had 31 catches for 488 yards and four touchdowns.
