LINCOLN — A 23-year-old Greenwood man was cited for failure to stop at a red light after his dump truck allegedly triggered a crash involving three school buses Tuesday morning, police said.
According to Delaware State Police, Dillon W. Taylor was driving a 1999 Mack dump truck northbound on U.S. 113 at approximately 7:35 a.m. when he allegedly failed to stop at a red light, swerved to avoid a school bus and struck its front left corner with the front right corner of the truck.
The dump truck continued moving to the northwest and it hit another school bus head-on at the intersection of Johnson Road/Fitzgerald Road, police said. That impact forced the bus into another bus heading to Morris Early Childhood Center, police said.
The driver of the first bus was transported by EMS to Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital where she was treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Mr. Taylor was transported to the hospital, where he was treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries.
The second bus was transporting six students ages 4 to 6, and none were injured in the collision, police said.
The collision resulted in a diesel fuel spill from the dump truck requiring a response by DNREC officers, police said. U.S. 113 northbound and southbound had single lane closures for approximately five hours as the crash was investigated and the fuel spill was cleaned up.
