DOVER — Dover police have arrested two men after a fatal shooting Thursday morning at the Pine Grove Apartments.
Officers responding to the 9:42 a.m. call Thursday found DaShawn Friend in the parking lot of Pine Grove Apartments on Webbs Lane.
He had been shot multiple times in the upper torso, police said, and he was declared deceased on the scene.
For the rest of the day, police and detectives pursued multiple leads in the case, which led to the arrest of two Dover men — Fchante Robertson, 27, of the 900 block of Whatcoat Drive, and James R. White, 30, of the unit block of Salisbury Road.
According to an affidavit of probable cause released from Justice of the Peace Court 7 on Friday, one of the officers tried to contact a man Thursday morning, later identified as Mr. Robertson, near the crime scene.
The man, who had dreadlocks and wore a red plaid shirt and gray jeans, fled on foot, and the officer was unable to catch him.
There were two cars at the scene of the crime, both with engines running and their front driver-side doors open — a 2014 Ford Fusion and a 2001 Chevrolet Impala.
According to the affidavit, blood was on the passenger seat of the Ford Fusion. A book bag with marijuana in it allegedly sat next to the driver-side rear door.
Mr. White’s identification was in the front passenger seat of the Impala.
Police later heard an anonymous tip called into Kent County Communications that said the suspects were at a residence on Palmer Road in Dover and that Mr. Robertson was cutting his dreadlocks.
They responded to the residence where they contacted both suspects.
According to the affidavit, after he was read his Miranda rights, Mr. Robertson said in an interview with police that he tried to rob the victim during a drug transaction.
In the interview, Mr. Robertson alleged Mr. White said early Thursday he wanted to take part in a “lick,” a term used for robbery, according to police.
Mr. Robertson then said he drove Mr. White in the Impala to the Pine Grove Apartments to purchase marijuana.
At the apartment complex, the suspects both moved into the back seat of the white Ford Fusion, which was occupied by two other subjects, one of whom was Mr. Friend, according to the affidavit. The other was not identified by police.
Mr. White sat behind the victim on the passenger side and Mr. Robertson sat on the driver side, Mr. Robertson said.
According to the affidavit, Mr. Robertson said the victim had the book bag of marijuana in the front seat.
Mr. White handed Mr. Robertson a loaded .22 caliber Ruger handgun to rob the victim, but the victim saw the handgun and displayed his own handgun, according to police.
Mr. Robertson said he then intentionally fired one shot at the victim, grabbed the book bag and fled the scene. While he was running, he dropped the book bag next to the Ford Fusion.
When he was contacted by Dover police, he fled across the street toward John Clark Road and ditched the handgun. Officers then responded to the area of John Clark and Richard Bassett roads where they recovered the gun.
Mr. Robertson was charged with first-degree murder, first-degree robbery, second-degree conspiracy, possession of a deadly weapon during commission of a felony, possession of firearm by a person prohibited, possession of ammunition by a person prohibited and resisting arrest.
Mr. White was charged with first-degree robbery, second-degree conspiracy, possession of a deadly weapon during commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited and possession of ammunition by a person prohibited.
