Student arrested in Smyrna High bathroom fire

Posted

SMYRNA — No injuries were reported and a 15-year-old male student was arrested following an intentionally set bathroom fire inside Smyrna High late Monday morning, officials said.

Just before 11 a.m., State Fire Marshal Chief Deputy spokesman Scott Bullock said, a student spotted smoke coming from a first floor bathroom stall and alerted staff. Staff engaged the building’s fire alarm system as an evacuation began.

Using fire extinguishers, staff and the School Resource Officer put out the blaze before Citizens’ Hose Company of Smyrna’s arrival, Mr. Bullock said. School resumed until the end of the regular day, authorities said.

Smyrna Police and Deputy Fire Marshals investigated, which led to the student’s arrest on Wednesday. The youth was taken into custody at Smyrna High and then charged with first-degree felony arson.

The student allegedly used an open flame device to ignite combustible materials, Mr. Bullock said. A soap dispensers on the wall was damaged along the walls due to smoke.

Damage was estimated at more than $2,500.

During an arraignment at Family Court, the juvenile was given a $1,000 unsecured bond and released to his guardians.

The student was believed to have acted alone, and no further arrests were expected.

Attempts to reach the Smyrna School District for comment Thursday were unsuccessful.
