Speak Up: Seasonal shortage of crabs leads to higher prices

Posted

A limited supply of crabs this summer has led to higher prices at stores and restaurants and brought some crabby moods to seafood lovers throughout Delaware. So far this summer, it has been slim — and expensive — pickings. However, that isn’t unusual to the First State around the Fourth of July holiday, according to Isaac Burrows, who has owned and operated Sambo’s Tavern in Leipsic since the mid-1980s.

  • Meanwhile, the surveys said the crab population was fine. — Rich King
  • Yeah, but who’s pulling them in? Nobody wants to work this year. — Samie Lee
  • Crabbers are working just fine. They are the sellers to the market. Pickers is the work issue; catching is not. And to be clear, it isn’t the crabbers raising these prices. That would be the distributors. — Rich King
  • I’d think a massive surplus, since crab consumption had to be way down from last year. — Bob Hice
  • Quit reading the news and be friends with a waterman. — Tommy Lee
  • Probably has nothing to do with rising water temperatures preventing them from spawning in the first place. — Josh Renner
  • From what I’ve read the population this year is the lowest it’s been since 2007. — Jaden Blondin
  • If all you people would just read the whole article instead of only the headline, you would probably learn one of the reasons for the short supply. — Bob Beckman
