Legislation that would ban untraceable homemade firearms advanced out of a House committee Tuesday despite public opposition. The legislation would outlaw “ghost guns,” firearms that lack serial numbers or other identifying markings, making them untraceable by law enforcement and often undetectable by metal detectors. Under the bill, it would be illegal to possess, manufacture, transport or sell an untraceable firearm, frame or receiver, as well as instructions for making a ghost gun using a 3-D printer. It would also be against the law to own or transfer any firearm or receiver with the knowledge that the manufacturer’s serial number has been removed or altered.
- Man, Republicans really love guns, to the point where they want to break the law to have them. — John Smith
- Man, Democrats really hate guns, to the point that they want to violate multiple constitutional rights to prevent people from owning them. — Chris Ostrom
- Nothing in the constitution about ghost guns. — John Smith
- You are right. The Constitution makes no distinction between types, makes, origins, etc. It prohibits the infringements on the right to bear arms. And this is just another attempt to make law-abiding citizens into criminals. How about we focus on enforcing existing gun laws and putting criminals in jail? — Chris Ostrom
- If we take the Constitution as the only word of law, then driver’s licenses are unconstitutional since there is no mention of them. Nor is there mention of any pollution rules or regs, nor any mention of banking regulation. Know what’s not in the Constitution? Rules or regs about human trafficking. So why is no one complaining about how rules about those items are unconstitutional? — John Smith
- How on Earth can you justify allowing someone to own an untraceable firearm? — Jaden Blondin
- Tell that to the criminals who steal them and grind off the serial numbers, then use them in a felony, then get reduced charges. — Howard Gaines III
- Umm, nobody should be able to own an untraceable gun. That’s the point. — Jaden Blondin
- Criminals don’t mind, and law-abiding folks aren’t the problem. Deal with the real issues: criminals with stolen guns getting reduced jail time! It isn’t the gun that’s the problem. — Howard Gaines III
- A law-abiding citizen shouldn’t own an untraceable gun. All guns need to be traceable in case of an incident. How is this even a debate? In civilized countries, this wouldn’t even be a discussion. — Jaden Blondin
