Speak Up: Civil rights activist calls for police accountability

Posted

Civil rights activist the Rev. Al Sharpton made a stop in the capital city Monday to speak in support of Senate Bill 149, which aims to increase transparency and allow more oversight of police. “If you have nothing to hide, then open up the files,” the Rev. Sharpton said in front of Legislative Hall. “Make it open to scrutiny by the citizens that pay you, so that people can see what is going on.”

  • Tell him to pay his taxes or go to jail. — Doug Poore
  • I know it’s a fine distinction, but Al Sharpton personally appears to owe no taxes. It is several businesses he runs that are behind. — Kathy Spring Jordan
  • Is he the owner? Yeah. His issue. — Doug Poore
  • True, but business taxes are the responsibility of the business, not necessarily the owners. That’s why companies can declare bankruptcy without affecting the finances of shareholders. It may not seem right to most of us, but that’s how it is. — Kathy Spring Jordan
  • He’s always stirring issues. — Jason Claire
  • You realize he wouldn’t even be here if the police were held accountable, right? But yeah, keep blaming activists and not the cause of the problem. — Frank Williamson
  • We need police accountability. But will Al also go and donate to the various agencies that help the poor and homeless in Dover? — John Smith
