Speak Up: A Dover Riverwalk?

Posted

Right now, it’s not definite whether the capital city will receive $6.9 million in funding from the American Rescue Plan Act or the nearly $19 million city officials believe they qualify for. Still, like a dreamer who purchased a Powerball ticket, members of Dover City Council have some big ideas about how the funding should be spent. One of the proposals discussed at last week’s Council Committee of the Whole virtual meeting came from City Councilman Ralph Taylor Jr., who suggested that the city look into creating a Riverwalk, starting across South State Street, near Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus, and winding along the St. Jones River to near Legislative Hall.

  • Instead of spending the money on something which has not been planned, why not use the $6.9 million to fix the downtown flooding problem? Our historic properties are in jeopardy because the city hasn’t fixed this basic infrastructure issue. — Ellen Richardson
  • What river runs through Dover? — Bob Skuse
  • St. Jones River. — Michael Robinson
  • Where will people park to use the Riverwalk? — Sandy McDermott Lewis
  • I feel like the money could be put to better use elsewhere. Like back into local businesses. — Sam Frankie Leister
  • Look at the way Silver Lake is before you think about a Riverwalk. The benches sound really nice for our overabundance of homeless to lay their heads, though. This money could and should be used for far better! — Haley Mills Morris
  • Absolutely not. We already have sidewalks in many areas of the lake, and Dover has massive infrastructure problems. Until those infrastructure problems are taken care of, we don’t need to add more sidewalks and bike paths. — Jonathan Contant
  • Parking meters for the whole city. — Travis Bowers
  • Dover has water and wastewater repairs to do. How about sticking to the basics before you start on your wish list? — Will Garfinkel
