Smyrna tops four Henlopen teams in football tourney

DOVER - Smyrna High will make its return to the DIAA football state tournament as the No. 3 seed in Division I as the two state tourney fields were announced on Sunday morning.

Sussex Tech is the fifth seed in the six-team Division I bracket while Henlopen Conference Southern Division champion Lake Forest while is the sixth seed and Woodbridge is seeded seventh in the eight-team Division II field. The tournament begins with first-round games next weekend.

Smyrna (9-1), the Henlopen North champion, will host sixth-seeded Mount Pleasant (7-3) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Also on Friday, fifth-seeded Sussex Tech (8-2) will travel to No. 4 Middletown (8-2) for a 7:30 p.m. contest in a rematch from last year’s Division I semifinals.

In the Division I semifinals, top-seeded Salesianum (9-1) will host the lowest-remaining seed on Nov. 27 at 7:30 p.m. at Wilmington’s Baynard Stadium. On Nov. 28, second-seeded William Penn (9-1), the defending state champion, will host the highest-remaining seed at 1 p.m.

The Division title game is slated for Dec. 5 at 1 p.m. in Delaware Stadium.

In Division II, Lake Forest (8-2) will face third-seeded Wilmington Friends (8-1) on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the game being played at Tower Hill. Woodbridge (7-3) will also play on Saturday when it takes on No. 2 Delaware Military (9-1) at Baynard Stadium at 7:30 p.m.

The semifinals will have the top two-remaining seeds hosting the two lowest-remaining seeds. The Division II finals will be played on Dec. 5 at 5:30 p.m. at Delaware Stadium.
