Smyrna Post 14 pulls out win in American Legion state tournament

Smyrna Post 14 rallied for the final four runs of the game to edge Stahl Post-30, 9-8, in the American Legion baseball state tournament on Sunday.

Trailing 7-5, Smyrna scored twice in both the eighth and ninth innings to pull out the victory on the second day of the eight-team tourney.

Fifth-seeded Smyrna Post 14 (1-0), in its first year in the league, plays again today at 4:30 p.m. when it takes on No. 1 seed Delaware Post 1 (1-0) at New Castle’s Wilson Field.

In other games today, eighth-seeded R.C. DuPont Post 18 (0-1) faces No. 5 Stahl Post 30 (0-1) at 9 p.m. before No. 2 Fox Post 2 (1-0) plays Nanticoke Post 6 (1-0) at 12:30 p.m.

In Sunday’s game, Stahl Post scored five runs in the bottom of the third to grab a 5-1 advantage before Smyrna rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth to knot the score at 5-5. Stahl Post went back up 7-5 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Stahl Post finished with a 14-9 edge in hits.

Senior League

Naamans 3, Maryland 0: The Delaware state champions stayed alive in the East Regional with the shutout win on Sunday.

Now 2-1, Naamans plays again today at 5 p.m. in Thorofare, N.J. against either Pennsylvania or New Jersey.

8-10 tournament

Newark National 7, M.O.T. 3: The District II champions advanced to the state finals with the victory on Sunday.

M.O.T. (0-1) will take on Lower Sussex (0-1) in the losers’ bracket finals today at 7 p.m. at Smyrna-Clayton. The winner faces Newark National (2-0) on Tuesday evening in the finals.

SOFTBALL

Senior League

New Jersey 4, M.O.T. 0: The Middletown-area all-stars fell to 1-1 with the loss on Sunday at the East Regional.

M.O.T. plays again today when it takes on Maryland (0-2) at 11:30 a.m. in Worcester, Mass. The East champion advances to the World Series in Lower Sussex.

Major League

Canal 8, Vermont 4: The state champions improved to 2-0 with the win on Sunday in the East Regional being played in Bristol, Conn.

Canal plays again today at 7 p.m. when it faces Maine.
