DOVER — Six arrests were made Saturday night after police responded to a fight involving more than 50 combatants in the Manchester Square neighborhood, authorities said.

After arriving at 8:30 p.m. at a site on Stevenson Drive, officers began to break up the fighting as “a large crowd gathered, becoming disorderly and hostile toward police,” Dover Police Cpl. Mark Hoffman said.

After a call for assistance, officers from the Cheswold, Camden and Smyrna police departments and Delaware State Police aided in “managing and dispersing the unruly crowd,” Cpl. Hoffman said.

Cpl. Hoffman described the hostile action from some crowd members as “not cooperating, cursing, yelling, interfering with attempts to disperse the crowd and make arrests.”

Police said the situation was under control by just after 9 p.m.

Those charged included:

• Anthony Clark, 16, of the unit block of Mifflin Meadows, riot, offensive touching, loitering. He was turned over to a parent/guardian.

• Kairi Buie, 17, of the unit block of Park Lane, riot, resisting arrest, offensive touching, loitering. He was turned over to a parent/guardian.

• Keon Cornish, 21, of the 1200 Block of Garfield Drive, riot, resisting arrest, offensive touching on a police officer, loitering. He was committed to the Delaware Department of Correction and not given bail based on a previous charge, police said.

• Eric Stewart, 23, of the 100 block of South New Street, riot, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, loitering. He was given a $2,501 unsecured bond.

• Lewis Harrell, 24, of the unit block of Harmony Lane, riot, offensive touching, loitering. He was given an $1,800 unsecured bond.

• Antwon Peace, 18, of the 3900 block of Peach Tree Run, riot, offensive touching, loitering, resisting arrest, menacing, criminal mischief. He was given a $3,300 unsecured bond.

Police said it was unknown what caused the fighting, which was called in to law enforcement from a witness/resident(s).

On Friday afternoon, officers encountered a large crowd in the 100 block of South New Street after a police-involved shooting of a 21-year-old Dover man.

Police said there was no indication that the two incidents were connected.

In general terms, police said officers and innocent bystanders are endangered by large scale riotous conditions that presents significant danger.

“There is an extremely high risk of danger to our officers as they are severely outnumbered in a situation as this,” Cpl. Hoffman said.

“It means that officers are constantly distracted by the many people involved and unable to fully focus and maintain their safety.

“As far as the general public is concerned, you’re always worried about an innocent bystander being harmed by a suspect, damaged property, etc. and the ability to treat anyone who is injured while risking a first responder’s safety.”
