The Wesley College field hockey team extended its winning streak to three straight, downing the Shenandoah University Hornets 1-0 on Tuesday afternoon in Winchester, Va.

Lauren Niezgoda netted the lone goal of the game, while Kelsey Fromal earned an assist. Makenzie McIntyre recorded her second consecutive shutout and Morgan Seymour increased her defensive saves tally to 16 on the season with three in the game.

In the 54th minute of the game, Niezgoda inserted a penalty corner to Isabella Lucia at the top of the arc. The senior fired in a short that was stopped in front by Fromal, who then dished back to Niezgoda for the finish. The goal put Wesley ahead with just over 20 minutes to play. McIntyre, Seymour and the Wesley defense held onto the slim lead to shutout the Hornets and earn the 1-0 victory.

Wesley improves to 4-11 on the season and will look to continue their momentum when they take on Friday when they travel to conference foe Christopher Newport.

MEN, James Madison 2, Delaware 1: Senior Marco Siverio posted the first goal of the game James Madison responded with two unanswered tallies Wednesday evening en route to a victory over Delaware at Sentara Park.

With the loss, the Blue Hens fall to 8-4-1 on the year and 3-2 with nine points in CAA play.

Siverio registered his first career goal in the 35th minute off a volley off the post from a deflected throw.

The Dukes (1-8-3, 1-2-2 CAA) tied things just three minutes in to the second half as Billy Metzler collected his first goal of the season while Brennen Burton recorded the game-winner in the 82nd minute.

WOMEN, Penn State Harrisburg 2, Wesley 0: The Wolverines could not manage to find the net as they fell to Penn State Harrisburg in a Capital Athletic Conference match in central Pennsylvania.

Lexie Gausepohl made five saves for the Wolverines, but took the loss between the pipes. Wesley was outshot 22-7 with only four shots on goal. Aline Check, Janiah Moore, Sammy Williams and Katie Ford each recorded an on-frame attempt but none struck gold for the Wesley offense.

The Nittany Lions scored in the 13th minute, finishing off a ball that glanced off the Wesley goalkeeper to take a 1-0 lead. In the 37th minute, Wesley midfielder Aline Check put a shot on net but it was turned away as the Wolverines went into the break trailing by a goal.

In the second half, Wesley cracked three shots on frame but could not find a finish. The Nittany Lions added to their lead later in the half getting an important insurance goal and keeping Wesley off the board for the remainder of the game.

Wesley moved to 4-7-1 on the season with a 0-5-0 mark in conference play. The squad will continue to seek their first conference win of the year when they take on St. Mary’s on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m.

College volleyball

Marymount 3, Wesley 0: Jessica Tynes led the Wolverines offensively with 12 kills while Beth Schlecker dished out 12 assists. Lindsay Burg chipped in with 10 assists while Tionne Graves-Brown and Kristin Wissler led the team with 10 digs each. Wissler also led the team with three aces and Codi Ziolkowski recorded a team-high four total blocks (two solo).

Boys’ soccer

Delmarva Christian 5, Salisbury Christian, Md. 1: Joshua Taylor’s two goals paced the Royals to the out of state victory as they improved to 7-4.

Jorge Altieri and Joshua McMillon also added a goal apiece for Delmarva Christian who scored the first goal of the game on a Salisbury Christian own goal.

College bowling

Hornets place pair on preseason All-MEAC team: Chelsey Merklinger and Elizabeth Burkholder of the reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion Delaware State bowling team have been named to the 2016-17 Preseason All-MEAC First Team.

Merklinger was a 2015-16 All-MEAC First Team choice, while Burkholder was a third team selection last season. DSU is the only school with more than one 2016-17 All-MEAC preseason members.

North Carolina A&T’s MacKenzie Robinson was selected as the MEAC Preseason Bowler-of-the-Year.

The conference also announced today its preseason poll for the upcoming year.

Delaware State is picked to finish a close second to Maryland-Eastern Shore in the MEAC 2016-17 Northern Division regular season race, according to pollsters. The Hornets collected eight first place votes and 78 points, while UMES garnered nine first place votes and 80 points.
