Three seniors scored goals as Wesley College picked up its first field hockey victory of the season, a 3-1 win at Ferrum on Sunday afternoon.

Isabella Lucia, Lauren Niezgoda (Caesar Rodney) and Allison Perugini each netted a goal for the Wolverines (1-3) with Lucia and Niezgoda each earning assists.

Goalie Bridget Wood earned the win, playing the first half without allowing a goal and making two saves. Sidney Knott played the second half for the Wolverines.

Wesley took an early lead by scoring off a set piece in the sixth minute. On a penalty corner, Niezgoda inserted to Lucia, who ripped a shot off the post. The rebound went directly to Niezgoda, who fired it home to put Wesley ahead 1-0.

After the Panthers tied the score in the 43rd minute, Wesley answered shortly after. On another set play, Niezgoda inserted to Lucia at the top of the arc. The senior brought the ball back into the shooting circle and fired a shot that found the back of the box to make it 2-1.

Later in the second half, Perugini got in on the scoring. Taylor Timmons broke down the defense, dribbling down the right flank, and centered it to Perugini.

The senior collected the pass and fired a shot that beat the goalie and put the Wolverines ahead 3-1 with just over five minutes remaining.

Field hockey

Princeton 4, Delaware 2: Senior Esmée Peet became the eighth Blue Hen to reach the 100-point plateau Sunday afternoon, but No. 10 Delaware fell to No. 16 Princeton.

Junior Taylor Lister scored Delaware’s first goal of the afternoon and her first of the season in the 29th minute to tie the score at 1-1.

Peet then gave the Hens the 2-1 advantage in the 34th minute off a deflection from sophomore Greta Nauck.

But, after tying the game by halftime, the Tigers netted the only two goals of the second half to post the win.

MEN, Villanova 2, Delaware 1: Senior Guillermo Delgado gave the Hens the 1-0 lead within the first two minutes of the game, but Villanova held No. 22 Delaware scoreless over the next 88 minutes en route to the win.

The loss marks the first for the Blue Hens this season as Delaware (4-1) gave up a goal for the first time in 452:02 minutes, dating to the first half of last season’s CAA championship game at Hofstra.

Just 1:16 into the contest, Delgado received a pass from classmate Dani Laguna less than five yards in front of the goal before knocking it in to the lower left corner of the net. Delgado is now just four points (41g, 13a) away from tying Mike Biggs’ school-record 99 (47g, 5a) set from 1968-70.

Hampden-Sydney 3, Wesley 0: Goalie Kyle Springsteen made fives saves in just over 70 minutes for the Wolverines (1-2-2) in their loss on Sunday.

Wesley had several opportunities to score but could not convert on any of them. In the 22nd minute, Danny Garza broke down the defense on the left side and centered a pass into Sean Bucior.

Bucior laid the ball off to a charging Chris Bramble who ripped a shot, but right into the hands of the goalkeeper.

WOMEN, Pennsylvania 2, Delaware 1: Blue Hen senior forward Natalie Zelenky scored her first goal of the season but it wasn’t enough as Delaware dropped the one-goal decision.

Penn scored two goals in the first 26 minutes of the game and held on the rest of the way, handing Delaware (1-7) its second straight loss.

College football

Wesley’s Manna honored: Wesley College linebacker Samer Manna was named the Defensive Player of the Week by the New Jersey Athletic Conference.

In a 43-7 victory in which the Wolverine defense held Frostburg to only 240 total yards of offense, Manna tallied a game-high 12 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for a loss. He also registered a sack to help propel Wesley to its first win of the season.

Manna currently leads the NJAC in tackles (11.5 per game).
