Jay Whitby came in second place at the Delaware Open in Tuesday.

Jay Whitby kept the pressure on Peter Barron until the end on Tuesday.

But Barron, the 40-year-old from Baywood Greens, was just too steady down the stretch.

Barron parred the final four holes to hold off Wild Quail’s Whitby and capture the 51st Delaware Open at Deerfield Golf Course.

A resident of Mays Landing, N.J., Barron shot a seven-under par 203 to finish three shots ahead of Whitby, who placed second with a 206.

The 36-hole tourney concluded with two rounds on Tuesday.

Barron fired a second-round 66 — the low round of the tournament — to take sole possession of the lead before finishing with a 69. Whitby, who was tied for the first-round lead, closed with rounds of 71 and 67.

The 67 was his low round of the tournament. The 29-year-old from Wyoming carded five birdies against two bogeys in his third round.

Whitby was trying to win the Delaware Open and Amateur in the same summer.

Barron had 13 birdies and six bogeys in his round. He birdied the first and 14th holes in all three of his rounds.

Mike Tobiason (Deerfield) and Greg Wolfe (Cavaliers) tied for third at 209, six shots off the lead. The top four players were the only ones to break par for the tourney.

Dover High grad Chris Wisler placed third with a 211.

Senior League

District-III 14, Latin America 5: After a pair of tough losses, Sussex County’s District III finally picked up its first victory at the Senior League World series on Tuesday morning in Roxana.

District III (1-2) jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings before picking up the win. The host squad had lost its first two games by a total of just three runs.

Late Monday night, District III dropped a tough 6-4 decision to U.S. Southwest after rallying for four runs in its last two at-bats.

On Tuesday morning, though, District III got going early with three runs in the first inning and four in the second.

Hannah Jones had two hits, three RBI and a run scored for the Laurel-based team with Jenna Calloway (2 RBI, 2 runs), Logan Walls (3 RBI), Jordyn Virden (1 RBI, 3 runs) and Jessica Evans (2 runs) also leading the way.

Six District III players had RBI, eight scored runs and six had hits.

Rachel Calloway (6 innings) and Victoria Henry (1 inning) combined to pitch for District III, which plays again on Thursday when it faces Asia-Pacific at 3 p.m.

Big League

District-III 8, Latin America 1: Mika Walker pitched a complete-game five-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks as Sussex County’s District III evened its record at 1-1 with the Big League World Series win on Monday in Roxana.

The host all-stars opened up a 6-0 advantage after scoring five runs in the second inning. Brooke Stoeckel hit a two-run home run to left to cap off the second-inning outburst.

Mya Maddox (2 runs, 1 RBI) collected three of District III’s eight hits in the contest. Stoeckel finished with two hits, three RBI and a run scored while Karleigh Carroll scored twice.

Latin America’s only run came in the fourth.

District III is slated to be in action again today when it faces Europe-Africa at 8 p.m.

College football

Three Wolverines named preseason All-Americans: D3football.com has named three Wesley College football players as preseason All-Americans.

Wide receiver Bryce Shade and linebacker Samer Manna were named to the first team while offensive lineman Matthew Gono was named to the second team.

A rising senior, Bryce Shade set the Wesley College program record last season with 83 receptions for 1,427 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Linebacker Samer Manna garnered All-NJAC first-team honors as well as being named to the D3Football.com All-East Region second team. As a sophomore, Manna recorded a team-high 127 tackles, including 55 solo. He also added three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries, two QB hurries, a sack, and three pass breakups.

Wesley opens the season on Sept. 2 by hosting Delaware Valley.
