Wild Quail’s Jeff Allen sank a 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole to win the Delaware State Golf Association’s Senior Championship on Tuesday.

Allen’s birdie on No. 18 left him with a two-over-par 142 for the 36-hole tournament, played at The Rookery North.

The 59-year-old from Wyoming finished two shots ahead of Wilmington’s Randy Mitchell, who bogeyed the last hole to card a 144 for the tourney.

Avondale, Pa.’s Chris Smedley and Kennett Square, Pa.’s Michael Moser tied for third at 145.

Allen, who won the event for the first time in his career, took a two-stroke lead into Tuesday’s final round after firing a 69 on Monday. That was the only sub-70 round of the tournament.

On Tuesday, Allen finished with a 73. His birdie on the 18th hole was his only one of the day.

While he hit 13 of 18 greens in regulation, Allen said the putt on 18 was the only one longer than five feet that he sank all day.

“I just could not make the adjustment for the green speed today and found myself faced with lots of three-foot par-saving putts,” he said.

Holding a one-shot lead on the par-five 17th hole, Allen hit his tee shot way left. But he found his ball on the edge of the woods, punched out and two-putted from 30 feet to save par.

Last Thursday, Allen won the Maryland Interstate Senior Golf Championship in a two-hole playoff in Rockville, Md.

On Monday, he’ll try to qualify for the U.S. Senior Amateur at Prospect Bay Country Club.

College basketball

UD women set nonconference slate: Seven home dates highlight the non-conference portion of the 2016-17 Delaware women’s basketball schedule, as announced by coach Tina Martin on Tuesday afternoon.

The Blue Hens, who went 16-15 last season with their seventh straight trip to the CAA semifinals, will play seven of their 11 non-conference contests at the Carpenter Center.

This coming season, Delaware will face six squads that reached the NCAA Tournament or WNIT, including two conference champions last season. The Belue Hens will also face three first-time opponents.

The Hens open the year by hosting George Mason on Nov. 13 before taking a trip to Washington D.C. to face American on Nov. 16. Delaware then returns home for matchups against NCAA Tournament teams St. Bonaventure (Nov. 19) and Princeton (Nov. 22).

For the second straight season, the Blue Hens will fly west for the Thanksgiving break as Cal-State Northridge will host Delaware, Detroit and Michigan State on Nov. 25-26. Delaware has never faced CSUN or Detriot while the Spartans finished last season ranked No. 16/21 nationally.

UD follows with back-to-back home contests against NCAA Tournament competitor and NEC champion Robert Morris (Dec. 1) and WNIT participant Georgetown (Dec. 4) before a quick trek to Baltimore for a Dec. 7 pairing at Loyola.

The Hens will wrap non-conference play before the holiday break with matchups vs. Patriot League champion Army (Dec. 11) and Hartford (Dec. 21).

Martin is in her 21st season at the helm of the Blue Hens, who return seven letter-winners from last year while adding four newcomers to the squad.

College volleyball

Hens name two captains: Delaware volleyball coach Bonnie Kenny has announced that seniors Taylor Hollingsworth and Alexa Swann will serve as team captains for the Blue Hens during the 2016 season.

Hollingsworth, a defensive specialist/libero, appeared in all 113 sets while making 12 starts last year, when she ranked third on the Hens with 256 digs and fourth with 21 service aces. She reached double figure digs in 10 matches during the campaign, including a season-high 18 digs in a five-set victory over Elon.

A three-year letterwinner, Hollingsworth has posted 1,013 digs, 84 assists and 48 aces during her UD career.

Swann, a middle blocker, ranked fourth in the CAA with 1.13 blocks per set and eighth with a .292 hitting percentage in 2015, when she started all 29 matches for the Hens. She was third on the squad with 246 kills, including a career-high 19 at Charleston, and led UD with 128 blocks.

Swann has recorded 495 kills and 259 blocks during her first two years at Delaware, and is currently the school’s career leader by averaging 1.13 blocks per set.

The Blue Hens open their regular season on Aug. 26 against Coppin State on the first day of the Navy Kristen Dickmann Invitational.
