The Wesley College field hockey team scored the final two goals before its comeback fell short in a 4-2 loss to Elizabethtown on Wednesday night.

Lauren Niezgoda (Caesar Rodney High) and Isabella Lucia (Middletown) each recorded a goal and an assist while Sidney Knott made eight saves in the first half for the Wolverines (0-2). Bridget Wood and Makenzie McIntyre each made four saves splitting time in the second half.

In the second half, Wesley was outshot 21-4 but took advantage of its set plays, scoring both goals off of corners.

Trailing 4-0 with under 15 minutes remaining, Niezgoda inserted a corner to Lucia at the top of the circle. The senior midfielder ripped a ball back to Niezgoda on the near post who popped the ball straight up to herself and batted it over her shoulder and past the keeper for Wesley’s first score.

Nearly 5:30 later, Niezgoda again inserted the corner to Lucia, but instead of giving it back, the midfielder ripped a shot past the pads of the keeper and into the bottom of the goal for another score.

Trailing 4-2 with under 10 minutes remaining, the Wolverines continued to press forward, but could not manage another scoring opportunity.

College volleyball

Wesley 3, Trinity 0: The Wolverines recorded a combined 30 aces, with Lindsay Burg and Codi Ziolkowski leading the way with seven apiece, as Wesley posted the win.

Tionne Graves-Brown had a team-high nine kills, swinging for a .643 attack percentage. Burg led Wesley (3-0) with 15 assists while Graves-Brown finished with a squad-best five digs.

Wesley allowed just 21 points to Trinity, making only 13 errors. As a team, the Wolverines earned a .294 attack percentage in the first set to win 25-12. In the second set the Wolverines swung for .211 in a 25-7 win.In the third the Wolverines hit .190 in a 25-6 set win to close out the victory.

College soccer

MEN, Delaware 2, Iona 0: With Wednesday’s win, The Blue Hens (4-0) have now opened the season by holding their first four opponents scoreless, a feat last accomplished by the 1974 UD squad that went 2-0-2 while outscoring its competition, 8-0, to start the year.

The 22nd-ranked Hens outshot Iona, 21-3, while redshirt sophomore goalie Todd Morton collected one save in the win.

Freshman Fede Prieto picked up his first career goal in the 58th minute. Senior Dani Laguna collected the rebound off the post before dishing it off to Prieto, who headed it in from about five yards out on the right side to give Delaware the 1-0 lead.

In the 85th minute, seniors Jaime Martinez and Guillermo Delgado nearly replicated the earlier goal to put Delaware ahead, 2-0. Martinez, who has been hampered by leg injuries the past two seasons, received the cross from Delgado on the right side of the net, where he punched it in from a couple of yards out.
