The Wesley College baseball team earned its second consecutive Capital Athletic Conference win over a top-25 opponent, defeating No. 12 Salisbury University 10-9 on Wednesday at Bob Reed Field. The Wolverines scored eight runs in the first three innings and held off a Sea Gull rally to earn the victory.

Andrew Weaver got the starting nod, going 4.1 innings. The starter allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits but couldn’t complete the fifth to earn the win. Cody Simet tossed the next inning and two-thirds allowing three runs. Sam Meck came in in the seventh allowing an earned run on two hits followed by Nate Weir who tossed a scoreless eighth and Eric Willey who shut down the side in the ninth for the save.

Chris Seibert and Joseph Hummel each blasted two-run home runs for the Wolverines. Hummel finished with four RBI while Seibert had three. KeAndre Jones increased his hitting streak to 13 games with a double while Ron Morello, Eric Speidel, and Trey Mears each had two hits apiece.

The Wolverines started the game with a five-run first inning, jumping all over the Sea Gulls and punishing their defensive mistakes. Speidel led off with a single, took second on a failed pick-off and third on a wild pitch. The shortstop came home two batters later on a Mears single.

Back-to-back walks to Mike Calvarese and Ron Morello brought in another run and then Joe Hummel blasted a long single off the left field wall scoring two. Morello stole third and came home when the throw went off the third baseman’s glove, making it 5-0. Chris Seibert added a run in the second inning with an RBI single to make it 6-0 and Hummel blasted a two-run home run to the opposite field to put the Wolverines ahead 8-0 in the third.

The Sea Gulls came storming back to tie the game though, scoring five runs in the top of the fifth and three more in the top of the sixth to draw the game level at 8-8.

With one swing of the bat Wesley regained the lead for good. Chris Seibert’s two-run blast to left field in the bottom of the sixth inning put the Wolverines ahead 10-8, and it would prove the difference as Meck, Weir, and Willey combined to allow just one run over the final three innings giving the Wolverines the 10-9 victory.

Wesley improves to 11-12 on the season and 5-5 in the CAC.

Rider 11, Delaware State 7: Delaware State held an early 4-0 lead, but faltered in the middle innings when the Broncs took control of the game by scoring five runs in the sixth to snap a 6-6 tie.

Tyler Kaiser and Christian Estevez drove in three runs each to lead Rider’s 11-hit attack. Freshman catcher Adrian Hill and Jake Bartlett led the Hornets with two RBI.

The Hornets used small ball to open the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Todd Henry was walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a wild pick-off attempt. Henry move to third on a grounder by Kwestin Smith and scored the first run of the game on a grounder by Darnel Maisonet.

DSU scored three runs on just one hit in the second to open up a four-run lead.

After Chris Panzarella walked to load the bases, Hill singled through the left side to score Onderko and Zielecki, giving the Hornets a 3-0 lead. DSU went up 4-0 when Panzarella later scored on a wild pitch.

The Broncs took their first lead of the game with two runs in the fourth. Jake Bender doubled in the first run of the inning and the go-ahead run scored on a DSU error with two outs.

The Hornets tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out double by Bartlett. Henry scored on the play to tie the game at 5-5, but Hill was cut down at the plate while trying to score from first to end the inning.

The score was 6-6 after each team scored a run on a wild pitch in the fifth inning.

In Rider’s five-run sixth, Kaiser’s two-run double gave the Broncs an 8-6 lead. The bases were loaded with two outs when Estevez looped a fly to left that dropped in for a double, chasing home three more runs to put the visitors ahead 11-6.
