The Delaware bats awoke just in time Sunday afternoon and the result was a memorable comeback victory.

The Blue Hen baseball squad erased a four-run, eighth-inning deficit to edge Colonial Athletic Association rival William & Mary, 5-4, in 11 innings at Bob Hannah Stadium.

The Hens scored three runs in the eighth and one in the ninth before finally pushing across the winning run on an RBI hit by leadoff hitter Kevin Mohollen in the 11th.

Four Blue Hens relievers combined to hold the Tribe scoreless for the final eight innings, highlighted by Burk FitzPatrick’s four shutout innings.

“Today was an unbelievable win for our group,” said Delaware coach Jim Sherman. “I thought Burk Fitzpatrick did a heck of a job to keep us in the ballgame. Without his performance, not only in the eighth, but also throughout his outing, we do not win this game.“

Trailing 4-0, Delaware (3-3 CAA, 5-10 overall) finally came to life in the eighth, scoring three runs on four hits. Jordan Glover tripled to knock in one run and Doug Trimble followed with an RBI single.

Later in the inning, Jeremy Ake split the right centerfield gap for a double that scored Trimble.

In the top of the ninth, Diaz Nardo (Cape Henlopen) led off with a single before Kevin Mohollen tied the game at 4-4 on his CAA-best fourth triple of the season.

UMES sweeps Hornets: Maryland Eastern Shore took a pair of games from Delaware State, 8-1, 3-2, on Sunday.

In the opener, Zach Mills pitched a two-hitter and struck out 11 against the Hornets (4-5 MEAC, 8-14 overall).

DelState led 2-0 in the nightcap before UMES scored three runs in the third.

College softball

Delaware State 11, Coppin State 9: The Hornets held seven-run leads on two occasions before holding on to sweep the three-game MEAC series.

Freshman catcher Desiree Moreno was 2-for-4 with four runs batted in, while Dani Velez and Mika Lumsden had two hits and three RBI each to lead the Hornets’ 14-hit attack.

Moreno was 6-for-10 with a home run, three doubles, a triple and eight RBI in the series. She has stretched her team-leading RBI total to 17 and has climbed to second on the Hornets (7-1 MEAC North, 8-18 overall) in batting at .282 this season.

Hens sweep Drexel: Delaware exploded for 19 runs on 26 hits as the Blue Hens swept Drexel, 11-3 and 8-0.

The Hens fell behind 3-1 in the opener but responded to score the final 18 runs of the day, as Delaware (4-2 CAA, 14-14) reached .500.

Devon Steiner went 5-for-7 with six RBI, while Giovanna Kolofer added four hits and drove home five. Emily Neal and Anna Steinmetz also had four hits on the day, while Mariah Kondravy added three and Leanna Gearhart scored four times.

Junior righthander Jordan Cargile scattered seven hits in 10 scoreless innings while picking up a pair of wins.

College lacrosse

WOMEN, Princeton 16, Delaware 4: The Blue Hens played No. 8-ranked Princeton nearly straight up for the first 30 minutes, but the Tigers dominated the second half.

Delaware (5-5) jumped out to a 3-2 lead in the first 14 minutes of action but Princeton scored the final three goals of the first half to take a 5-3 lead at the break and then scored the first nine goals of the second stanza to take control.

Stetson 24, Delaware State 0: A total of 14 Stetson players scored the decisive win over the Hornets (1-3).

Delaware State was outshot 38-8 in the contest.

College golf

UD men tie for third: The Delaware men’s golf team finished in a tie for third place while Blue Hen junior Jack Gianniny tied for the individual lead before falling in a playoff this weekend at the Manor Intercollegiate.

The Blue Hens, who fired 292 and 293 rounds on Saturday, finished with a 290 on Sunday to tie for third place out of 16 teams with an 875 total. Rhode Island captured the team title with an 872 score,

Wolverines place 10th: Wesley College finished 10th in the 19-team field at the Rosemont Raven Invitational this weekend.

The Wolverines shot a 663 in the two-day tournament. Host Rosemont took the team trophy with a two-day total of 613.

Tyler Spielberger and Dylan Chessher led the Wolverines with a pair of top-25 finishes. Spielberger tied for 22nd place, shooting 161 while Chesser recorded one more stroke than Spielberger to tie for 25th place.
