The Smyrna High volleyball team captured the Henlopen Conference volleyball championship with a 3-0 victory over Delmar High on Tuesday night at Milford High.

Erin Smallwood led the Eagles with a match-high 12 kills and Marqueisha Bennett recorded 11. Julia Lutrell had nine kills for the Henlopen North champion Eagles while Kyle McCusker had 36 assists.

Delmar, the Henlopen South winners, were paced by Avery Wheatley’s four kills.

Set scores were 25-13, 25-11 and 25-9.

Field hockey

Lake Forest 3, Caesar Rodney 1: Mya Maddox netted a pair of goals to pace the Spartans to the victory.

Lake Forest outshot CR 19-3 and held a 15-3 edge in penalty corners.

Polytech 4, Woodbridge 0: Devon Ott scored two goals in the first half as the Panthers recorded a shutout against the Blue Raiders.

Mackenzie Estrada and Madi McKay added insurance goals in the second half for Polytech.

Boys’ soccer

Polytech 7, St. Elizabeth 1: Marco Maddalena’s hat trick paced the Panthers who also got a pair of goals from Zach Maheu.

Bryce Wahinya and Patrick O’Brien each scored one goal for Polytech.

Salesianum 3, Indian River 2: The Sals won on an overtime penalty kick in a game the Indians led 2-1 behind goals from Johan de Jesus Córdoba and Mikie Mochiam before a second half rally by Salesianum.

Wilmington Friends 3, Smyrna 1: Anthony Buscemi scored the lone goal for the Eagles in the defeat.

Sussex Tech 6, St. Georges 1: Patrick Short, Joshua Artiga and Denilson Ramos each netted two goals in the Raven victory.

Milford 2, Lake Forest 1: The Buccaneers rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit with two goals in the second half.

College field hockey

Hens remain at No. 9: Delaware maintained the No. 9 spot in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll Tuesday as teams prepare for conference tournament action this coming weekend.

The Blue Hens wrapped regular season play by tying a school record with 17 wins and went undefeated in conference action for just the second time since 1991 to earn the top seed in the CAA standings. Delaware is set to host the CAA Tournament for the second time in four seasons this coming weekend. The Hens previously went 6-0 during the 2013 campaign, a year in which Delaware last hosted the CAA Tournament and captured its first of three consecutive titles.

Nauck wins CAA weekly award: With another school record under her belt, sophomore Greta Nauck was tabbed Tuesday as the CAA Player of the Week.

Nauck posted three goals in wins over Northeastern and Drexel as Delaware notched their 13th straight win while concluding regular season play by tying the school record with 17 wins while going 6-0 in conference action for just the second time since 1991.

In Sunday’s 4-1 triumph over Drexel, Nauck registered her eighth multi-goal game of the season and en route broke the UD single-season goals record with 24 tallies. Casey Howard previously held the record of 22, which was set during the 2009 campaign.

The midfielder has been awarded CAA Player of the Week accolades three times this season.

Drexel’s Tess Bernheimer, a Cape Henlopen High product, garnered Rookie of the Week honors.

College basketball

Former Hornet Amere May in NBADL: Former Delaware State standout Amere May is a step closer to his dream of a National Basketball Association career. May this week joined the Santa Cruz Warriors, the development team of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors. The former Hornet star was selected on Sunday by the Canton Force, the Cleveland Cavaliers’ development team, with the 19th pick in the NBA Development League draft. The Force traded May to the Warriors’ farm club later in the day.

Since his Delaware State career ended in 2015, May has played professionally in Sicily, Belgium and Argentina.

May’s DSU career was highlighted by one of the best seasons ever by a Hornet as a senior during the 2014-15 campaign. He was tops in the MEAC and sixth among all NCAA Division I players in scoring at 21.0 points per game that season. His senior year totals of 671 points rank third and 89 three-point field goals are tied for second in a single-season in team history.

May scored 30-or-more points in five games during the 2014-15 campaign. He gained national attention  with a career-best 48-point performance in the Hornets’ 72-64 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn, tops among all NCAA Division I players that season and the most by a Hornet since Tom Davis set the school record with 50 in 1989. He scored 40 points and had five assists in the 2014-15 regular season finale against Coppin State.

May was an All-MEAC First Team selection that season.

In 85 games with the Hornets, May scored 983 points and knocked down 123 three-point field goals.

The 50-game NBA Development League season begins on Nov. 12.
