Smyrna High used a four-run second inning to knock off Caravel, 5-3, in nonconference softball on Monday afternoon.

The loss was only the second of the year against a Delaware team for the Buccaneers (13-3) while the Eagles (11-3) won their second in a row.

Winning pitcher Jessica Anderson threw a four-hitter for Smyrna while Madison Drummond went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI. Olyvia Smith had two RBI with Madison Price scoring twice.

Polytech 18, Seaford 3: Taylor Pechin hit a grand slam and Whitney DeMora also homered for the Panthers, who scored 12 runs in the first inning.

Samantha Johnson, Ayanna Cannon, and Shianne Johnson each had a hit for Seaford.

Sussex Central 7, Delmar 3: The Golden Knights scored three runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to rally from a 3-0 deficit.

The victory was the 10th in a row for Central (12-3). Chelsey Ward doubled and scored the winning run on a single by Karleigh Warren in the sixth.

Madison Lemon went 3-for-3 and scored twice for Delmar.

Indian River 9, Milford 4: Winning pitcher Abigail O’Shields shut out the Buccaneers over the final six innings as the Indians rallied for the win.

Milford got a three-run homerun from Nia Bowe in the first inning.

Samantha Mumford and Braydee Whitman scored three runs apiece for IR, which took the lead with four runs in the fifth.

St. Thomas More 19, Del. Public Safety & Security 1: Kara Scarengella pitched a five-inning one-hitter and hit a grand slam to pace the Ravens.

Sarah Reeves, Maggy Poppiti, Sabine Portalatin and Sabrina Portalatin also had mutiple hits.

Conrad 7, Woodbridge 5: Beverly VanBusKirk had two of the Raiders’ four hits in their nonconference loss.

Baseball

Cape Henlopen 13, Appoquinimink 4: The Vikings broke open a 2-2 game with seven runs in the third.

Noah Clifton (3 RBI, 3 runs) had four of Cape’s 17 hits. Zach Dale (4 runs, 1 RBI) added three hits while Will Jarrell collected a pair of triples.

Sussex Tech 7, Lake Forest 4: Winning pitcher Matt Warrington tossed a three-hitter with nine strikeouts for the Ravens.

Sussex Tech, which led 7-0 after three innings, got two hits apiece from Justin Hill, Luke Oliphant, Colin Bergh, and Kyle Lux.

The Spartans rallied for four runs in the fifth as Tyler Collins and Curtis Reed combined to strike out nine.

Indian River 17, Milford 9: J.J. Killen and Zane Ricard combined for five hits, nine runs scored and 10 RBI as the Indians rallied for the win.

IR scored 13 runs over its last three at-bats to overcome an 8-4 deficit. Ulises Barrientos earned the win in relief.

Milford’s Abraham Mow had three RBI with seven strikeouts in three innings.

Seaford 22, Howard 5: Winning pitcher Evan Nibblett had four hits and four RBI to spark the Blue Jays’ 18-hit attack.

Noah Waldridge also had four hits while Justin Gray added three for Seaford, which scored 11 runs in the third.

Red Lion Christian 22, St. Thomas More 0: The Ravens managed only one hit in the loss.

Salesianum 3, Cape Henlopen 1: Sallies finished off the eight-inning win in a game that was suspended by rain earlier in the season.

Reliever Austin Elliott struck out 10 for Cape.

Girls’ soccer

Smyrna 5, Newark 2: Casey Bell (3 assists) and Marissa McClenton both scored twice to lead the Eagles (8-6).

Kendra Mounts also scored for Smyrna while Samantha Sawyer made seven saves. The Eagles led 3-1 at halftime before adding the contest’s final two goals.

Caravel 1, Sussex Tech 0: The Buccaneers tallied the game’s only goal in the 68th minute.

Valencia Whealton made 10 saves for the Ravens (8-7), who were outshot 11-7.

Delmar 6, Lake Forest 3: The Wildcats scored three goals in each half of the Henlopen South victory.

Indian River 8, Laurel 0: Brooke Beam netted two of IR’s first three goals and added three assists as the Indians finished 7-0 in the Henlopen South,

Emma-Lee Merrick also scored twice with Aline Check-Guzman, Madison Mercer, Emma-Lee Merrick, Mackenzie Gorey-Yates and Maria Mateo-Matias all adding goals for IR.

Sussex Central 4, Seaford 2: The Golden Knights picked up a victory over the Blue Jays.

CR, IR to meet in title game: Northern Division winner Caesar Rodney and South champion Indian River will square off again in the Henlopen Conference girls’ soccer championship game.

The contest will be played on Friday at Milford High at 6 p.m. The Riders edged the Indians, 4-3, on May 2.

Tennis

CR takes boys’ title: Caesar Rodney won four of the five courts to capture the program’s seventh straight boys’ team title at the Henlopen Conference Tournament on Monday.

The Riders totaled 28 points to top second-place Dover, which had 18 points. CR also won the girls’ team crown on Saturday.

At first singles, Milford senior Colt Williamson won his third-straight Henlopen championship with a 6-3, 6-2 win over CR’s Rishi Gundakaram in the finals.

The Riders’ four conference champions were Parker Barton (second singles), David Haynes (third singles), Cyrus Shanehsaz-Hirsh Patel (first doubles) and Gregor Gravelle-Adam Ahern (second doubles).

Lacrosse

BOYS, Caesar Rodney 15, Appoquinimink 12: The Riders outscored the Jaguars 6-3 in the fourth quarter to snap a four-game losing streak.

Luke Rankin collected five goals and an assist for CR (8-6) while Patrick Matsko (1 assist) and Demetrius Stevenson (1 assist) tallied four goals each.

Jacob Copio (3 assists) and Jack Bobel also scored for the Riders with goalie Tyler Gross making 11 saves. CR outshot Appo, 35-32.

Caravel 8, Smyrna 7: The Eagles fell to 6-8 with the nonconference loss.

Sussex Tech 9, Delmar 8: Ian Carlisle’s overtime goal, his fourth of the game, lifted the Ravens.

Delmar tied the contest with just 1.5 seconds left in regulation.

Nathaniel Quillin (1 assist) added two goals with Jason Whaley (1 assist), Matthew Tull (2 assists) and Daniel Wilson netting Sussex Tech’s other goals, Ryan Justis made 13 saves.

Alexander Rosenthal (3 goals) and Andrew Blewitt (2 goals, 2 assists) were both multiple-goal scorers for the Wildcats. Remington Plunkert, Chance Watts and Masyn Lilly had Delmar’s other goals while Hunter Gilmore made nine saves.

Cape, Delmar in boys’ title game: Cape Henlopen, the Henlopen North champion, will host South winner Delmar in the Henlopen Confernce boys’ lacrosse title game on Friday at 7 p.m.

The two programs last met in the 2014 conference championship game with the Vikings winning, 17-2.

GIRLS, Cape Henlopen 17, St. Andrew’s 6: Lizzie Frederick (2 assists) and Cailey Thornburg (1 assist) netted four goals each to pace the Vikings.

Eddy Shoop (3 goals), Lindsay Monigle (2 goals, 1 assist) and Alia Marshall (2 goals) were also multiple-goal scorers for Cape, which led 9-3 at halftime. The Vikings held a 40-8 edge in shots.

Golf

Henlopen events scheduled: Division champions Caesar Rodney (North) and Delmar (South) will meet in the Henlopen Conference’s North-South Match on Friday at Baywood Greens at 3:30 p.m.

The Riders topped the Wildcats, 173-166, in a dual-meet on April 12 at Wild Quail Country Club.

The Henlopen tournament is then slated for May 24 at Cripple Creek.

College baseball

Hornets are MEAC’s No. 2 North seed: Delaware State will face North Carolina Central in the opening round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Salisbury Md.’s Perdue Stadium.

The Hornets are the No. 2 North seed after posting a 13-10 league record (13-35 overall) this season. N.C. Central is the No. 3 South seed. The Eagles were 11-13 in MEAC play and 24-28 overall this year.

The winner of the DSU/NCCU first-round game will face No. 1 South seed and defending champion Florida A&M on Friday at noon. The loser will play an elimination game against Bethune-Cookman or Coppin State on Thursday at 7 p.m.

This will be just the second MEAC Tournament meeting between Delaware State and N.C. Central. The Hornets won the first contest 16-2 in Norfolk, Va., in 2012.

UD’s Milley honored: Delaware junior lefthander Kevin Milley was named the Colonial Athletic Association Baseball Pitcher of the Week on Monday.

Making just his fourth start of the season and his first in conference play, Milley allowed only three hits and struck out 10 in a complete-game effort while leading the Blue Hens to a 6-1 win over Towson on Sunday.

Milley gave up a run on two hits in the first inning but shut Towson down the rest of the way, allowing just one hit over the final eight innings to spark the Blue Hens to their second straight win and fourth in the last five outings. His complete game was only the second by a UD pitcher this season.

Milley improved to 3-0 on the season and lowered his ERA to 5.18, as he made his 20th appearance on the mound for the Hens. He is the seventh UD player to earn CAA weekly honors this season.
