The 20-team expanded field and schedule for the 20-team Slam Dunk to the Beach boys’ basketball event hosted by Cape Henlopen High was announced on Wednesday afternoon. The tournament is scheduled for Dec. 27-29.

Smyrna High is the lone team from Kent County competing. The Eagles will play in the first game of the week with a 12 p.m. contest against Bishop McNamara of Maryland on Dec. 27. Smyrna also plays instate Sanford School on Dec. 29 at 12:30 p.m.

The hosts Cape Henlopen have the nightcap on Dec. 27 against another instate team, Mount Pleasant High at 9 p.m. Cape Henlopen is also competing in the final game of the event against Eleanor Roosevelt of Maryland on Dec. 29 at 9 p.m.

There are five teams ranked in USA Today’s Super-25 preseason rankings who will play at the showcase which includes Patrick School (Elizabeth, N.J.) – 10th, Westtown (West Chester, Pa.) – 11th, Gray Collegiate (Columbia, S.C.) – 16th, St. Benedict’s Prep (Newark, N.J.) – 17th and Neumann-Goretti (Philadelphia) – 25th.

Other teams involved are St. Michael’s (Toronto, Ontario), Sagemont (Weston, Fla.), Paul VI (Fairfax, Va.), Bishop Loughlin (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Our Savior New American (Centereach, N.Y.), St. Raymond (Bronx, N.Y.), Roselle Catholic (Roselle, N.J.), Bishop McNamara (Forestville, Md.), Baltimore Polytechnic (Baltimore, Md.), Eleanor Roosevelt (Greenbelt, Md.) and Archbishop Wood (Warminster, Pa.).

College football

UD’s Reeder garners weekly honor: Thanks to a dominating effort in which he helped force three turnovers and allow just 15 total yards in the second half of a 33-17 win over Albany last Saturday, University of Delaware sophomore linebacker Troy Reeder has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Football Defensive Player of the Week.

Reeder, a 6-2, 235 finance major from Salesianum, was also selected as the College Sports Madness National Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the STATS Inc. National Defensive Player of the Week Honor Roll.

Reeder, a first-year transfer from Penn State, collected five tackles and played a role in three forced turnovers. He intercepted his second pass of the season in the first half, forced two fumbles, and recovered another fumble that he forced. Delaware allowed just 236 total yards and seven first downs for the game but allowed a paltry 15 yards and one first down during the entire second half as Delaware pulled away for its seconds straight win. The Hens forced five turnovers overall.

Reeder now ranks second on the team with 54 tackles and is tied for the team lead in forced fumbles (2) and interceptions (2).

He becomes the second Delaware player to be honored by the CAA this season after junior running back Wes Hills was recognized as the CAA Offensive Player of the Week for his play in the Oct. 8 game vs. Maine. Reeder becomes the first UD player to earn CAA Defensive Player of the Week honors since current Atlanta Falcons linebacker Paul Worrilow was honored twice back in the 2012 campaign.

Wolverines hosting youth football day: The Wesley College Football team has decided to give back to the Dover community by hosting Youth Football Day on Saturday, November 12, inviting all local youth football players and their parents to attend the game and receive free admission.

Youth football players and their guardians will be asked to use a separate entrance to the stadium in order to gain their free admission to the game. Players are encouraged, but not required, to wear their youth football uniforms to the game.

Women’s soccer

Cummings, Moore All-CAC: The Wesley College Women’s Soccer team relied heavily on local Caesar Rodney High products this season. Two of them, Aleya Cummings and Janiah Moore, were named to the Capital Athletic Conference All-Conference Team on Wednesday.

Cummings and Moore each received All-Conference Second Team honors after finishing first and second, respectively, in points for the Wolverines this season. Cummings netted 14 goals and dished off two assists on the year for a team-high 30 points. Moore scored six goals, including a team-high four in conference play, and dished off three assists to finish the year with 15 points.
