Smyrna High used six pins to down Salesianum 55-12 in a nonconference wrestling dual meet on Wednesday.

Earning pins for Smyrna were Nate Bryant (138), Tony Wuest (195), Jake Mitchell (220), Chris Begatto (113), Greg Baum (120) and Chase Poor (126).

Chase Archangelo (132) and Kalen Wilson (160) had major decisions, Tanner Mullen (145) had a tech fall while Dakota Kerr (152) and Nick Natarcola (106) won via decisions.

Cape Henlopen 44, Milford 30: Darnell Bailey (120), 126 Maxwell Norquest (126), Justin Wright (132), Cory Lawson (160) and Joel Torres (220) all had pins to help Cape pull off the victory on Wednesday.

Polytech 59, Delmar 18: Jaden McCove (160), Avery Mayan (170) and Vince Tascione (182) recorded three pins in a row as the Panthers pulled away. Also winning with pins were Nathan Jackson (120) and Justin Land (220).

Austin Price (106), Tyler Coburn (132), Evan Harris (138) and Derrick Dinova (152) earned decisions for Polytech.

Sussex Central 61, Indian River 18: Yony Garcia (106), Hayden McCabe (126), Mark Tolson (138), Brandon Bautista (152), John Morris (195), Mario Santizo (220) and Victor Cruz (285) all had pins for the Golden Knights.

Laurel 54, Howard 23: The Bulldogs defeated Howard in a nonconference matchup on Wednesday.

Boys’ basketball

Laurel 60, Seaford 55: Derrell Holden had a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds for Laurel in the Henlopen South victory.

Ja’Quan Darling of Seaford was the game’s top scorer with 28 points.

Girls’ basketball

Dover 46, William Penn 44: In a game contested on Tuesday night, Brionna Hill scored 15 points to pace the Senators.

Signing Day

Local signings: Dover had six athletes sign with colleges on Wednesday’s signing day, three soccer players, two field hockey players and one football.

Linebacker Melvin Jackson will play at Lincoln University, a Division II school located in Pennsylvania, next year. James Stock will continue his soccer career at Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky.

Caroline Cashion committed to Holy Cross to play Division I women’s soccer. Her teammate Katie Ford signed with Wesley College while field hockey players Brooklyn Peete and Rachel Mills will play at Kean University in New Jersey.

Other downstaters signing included Caesar Rodney’s Andrew Stant who will play men’s soccer at Air Force. Smyrna’s Jeff Campbell and Cape Henlopen’s Mike Williams signed with Delaware State for football while Cape Henlopen’s Brent Reid and Brandon Nixon, are expected to join the Delaware football team as preferred walk-ons.

Former Woodbridge High standout Dajon Emory signed with the Arkansas State football program after two seasons with Lackawanna.

Avery McMullin, a former Smryna High quarterback, is transferring from Delaware State to Rochester Community and Technical College in Minnesota.

Men’s basketball

Wesley 69, York 60: The Wolverines needed a win Wednesday night to remain in the thick of the hunt for the Capital Athletic Conference playoffs.

Senior Wayne Lennon propelled his team to a win with an outstanding individual performance as he led the Wolverines to a victory over York College.

Lennon finished with 21 points, eight rebounds, four assists, four blocks, and three steals as the Wolverines earned a CAC victory over the Spartans. Evan Anderson chipped in with 15 points while JW Lawson and Anthony Bowers each added nine.

Saeed Kelley contributed six points and five rebounds in an increased role to combat York’s interior size and depth. His solid play and defensive intensity seemed to spark the Wolverines as they earned their fifth conference win of the season.

Women’s basketball

York 72, Wesley 62: The Wolverines another one of the Capital Athletic Conference’s top squads extremely tight on Wednesday night at Wentworth Gymnasium, but saw York.

Alexus Stroud set a new career high in scoring for the second straight game, netting 22 points to follow up a 21-point performance on Monday evening at Southern Virginia. Brionna Johnson was limited to just four points, but grabbed 10 rebounds. Brittney Kerns scored 12 points while Tiyanna Gibbs netted 10 and led the team with five assists. Monshea Newsome-Murray swiped a team-best five steals for the Wolverines as well.

The Wolverines opened the third quarter with a Kerns three, cutting the deficit to just one. A few minutes later the squad gained a 45-43 lead on a trio of Stroud free throws. Kerns drilled another three before the end of the frame but not before York could jump out to a 52-48 lead.

In the fourth, Wesley cut the lead to one point again. Kerns sliced through the lane to get to the rim for a layup, making it 54-53 with 8:02 remaining. From there the Spartans took over. York notched 10 straight points as their lead ballooned to 64-53 and held off the Wolverines down the stretch.

The Wolverines move to 5-15 on the season with a 4-9 mark in conference play.
