Dover High scored four runs in the third inning and made the lead stand up in a 5-4 victory over Laurel in Henlopen Conference softball on Tuesday afternoon.

The Senators led 5-2 before the Bulldogs scored twice in the top of the sixth.

Dover (1-2) out-hit Laurel, 10-4, in picking up its first win of the season. The contest was delayed 20 minutes by rain.

Delmar 5, Sussex Central 4: Winning pitcher Tracey Pleasanton drove in the deciding run in the bottom of the 10th for the Wildcats.

Avery Wheatley had three of Delmar’s nine hits, Lexi Harris had two hits and Haley Rogers tied the game with a homer in the fifth.

For the Golden Knights, Taylor Evick and Natalie Oldham both had three hits while pitcher Hayley McCabe struck out five.

Sussex Tech 11, Middletown 0: Taylor Wroten pitched a five-inning five-hitter with 11 strikeouts to earn the shutout for the Ravens.

Shannon Lord (3-for-3), Madison Watson (2 hits, homer) and Jena Tate (double) all drove in three runs to pace Sussex Tech’s 12-hit attack.

Brooke Ward added two hits with Jaykala Sample driving in a pair of runs.

Delmarva Christian 18, Sts. Peter & Paul 0: Ashlyn Stonebraker collected three extra-base hits and five RBI to power the Royals.

Also leading Delmarva Christian was Jordyn Difava (4-for-4, 2 RBI), Siera Jones (3-for-3, RBI, 2 runs) and Bec Hastings (3-for-3, RBI, 3 runs). Camryn Thompson and Jayla Culver combined on a two-hit shutout with nine strikeouts.

Girls’ soccer

Caesar Rodney 3, Indian River 2: Three different players scored as the Riders held off the Indians.

A goal by Megan Powers at the 64:35 mark gave CR a 3-1 lead before Madison Hogsten netted a goal for IR in the 76th minute.

Jessie Prillaman gave the Riders (3-0) a 1-0 halftime advantage before Macy Ramsey made it 2-0 early in the second half.

Margaret Ford pulled the Indians within 2-1 in the 54th minute.

IR outshot CR, 10-7, while the Riders held a 5-3 edge in corners. The Riders’ Marianna Nuzzo made seven saves with the Indians’ Fabrea McCray stopping three shots.

Lake Forest 4, Smyrna 3: Hannah Fox netted a pair of goals in the final 30 minutes as the Spartans rallied for the win.

Fox finished with three goals, tying the contest in the 50th minute before tallying the game-winner in the 74th minute. Lauren Sharp also scored for Lake, which trailed 3-2 at halftime.

Marissa McClenton scored twice for the Eagles with Kendra Mounts adding the first goal.

Cape Henlopen 2, Sussex Academy 1: Darby Klopp’s goal in the 70th minute lifted the Vikings to the victory.

Cape knotted the score on a goal from Lindsey Swontek in the 60th minute. The Vikings outshot the Seahawks, 12-2, while both teams had six corner kicks.

Aliyah Patel tallied a first-half goal for Sussex Academy while Kierstin Blatzheim made 10 saves.

Dover 1, Woodbridge 1: Alyssa Burhop’s second-half goal gave the Blue Raiders the tie.

Sydni Warman scored in the first half for the Senators. Woodbridge held a 7-3 edge in shots.

Delmar 3, Sussex Tech 1: Logan Walls had two goals and an assist to spark the Wildcats to the victory.

Ashlyn Carr also scored for Delmar.

Sussex Central 2, Laurel 0: The Golden Knights scored twice in the second half to get the win.

Baseball

Dover 5, Laurel 0: Dominic Velazquez and Cameron Turner combined to pitch a four-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts.

Jared Hickox had two RBI for Dover, which scored its five runs in the first two innings.

Preston Hitchens and Dalton Perdue had two hits apiece for the Bulldogs.

Polytech 5, Lake Forest 1: Lou Whitaker pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts and also drove in a run to pace the Panthers.

Leading 3-1, Polytech scored twice in the seventh to cap off the victory in a contest played at Harrington Little League.

Josh Sivak allowed only four hits and two earned runs for the Spartans.

Delmar 2, Sussex Central 1: Isaac Austin scored the winning run in the 11th on a squeeze bunt by Dylan Pasta to lift the Wildcats.

The game was scoreless until each squad scored a run in the 10th. The two teams combined for 31 strikeouts.

Caravel 14, Indian River 9: The Buccaneers scored four runs in the fifth to break a 7-7 tie.

Grant Argo went 4-for-4 for the Indians, while Jacob Anderson, Aaron King and Mark Smith tallied two hits apiece.

BOYS, Gunston Day School 15, Delmarva Christian 1: Hunter Smith netted a first-quarter goal for the Royals.

College golf

UD men place third: The Delaware men’s golf team shot a 289 on Tuesday to finish third out of 19 squads at the Villanova Wildcat Invitational.

Delaware, which posted a 284 during Monday’s opening round, finished with a five-over par score of 573, four shots off the school record for a 36-hole tournament. Lehigh captured the team title with a 570 total, followed by Cleveland State at 572.

Blue Hens women second: The Delaware women’s golf squad fired the lowest team round of the day on Tuesday to finish in a tie for second place at the Kingsmill Intercollegiate.

Delaware carded a 294 during its final round at the tournament, tying for second place out of 22 teams with a 901 three-round total. Ball State captured the team title with a 900 score, while the Blue Hens and host William & Mary tied for second place one shot back.
