Danny Rocco

Richmond football coach Danny Rocco will meet with officials from both Delaware and Richmond today, according to a report in the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Rocco is believed to be a leading candidate for the Blue Hens’ head coaching vacancy.

The fifth-year Spiders’ coach saw Richmond’s season end with a 38-0 loss at Eastern Washington in the NCAA Division I FCS quarterfinals on Saturday.

The 56-year-old Rocco held a team meeting with his Richmond players on Sunday afternoon.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch did not elaborate on today’s meetings. Earlier, Rocco told the newspaper that he would consider all his options at the end of the season.

Rocco’s name has also come up in connection with the vacancy at Temple.

Delaware fired fourth-year coach Dave Brock on on Oct. 16 after the Hens got off to a 2-4 start.

College basketball

MEN, Wesley 80, Frostburg State 59: The Wolverines used a 54-point second half outburst to earn the Capital Athletic Conference victory on Sunday.

J.W. Lawson netted 21 points while Rasahn Brinkley had a 19-point, 15-rebound double-double. Brian Cameron added 13 points while Evan Anderson scored 11 as Wesley (2-1 CAC, 3-4 overall) set a season-high for points.

The Bobcats led 30-26 at halftime but a steal by Tyrone Craven turned into a transition bucket for Lawson as the Wolverines tied the game at 32-32 just 1:03 into the second half. Wesley took control from there.

Yale 81, Delaware 63: The Bulldogs knocked down 13 three-pointers and shot 52 percent from the field, pulling away in the second half for the nonconference win.

Blue Hen freshman guard Ryan Daly led all scorers with a season-high 20 points, including a 5-of-9 performance from behind the arc, and also grabbed a season-high nine rebounds. Chivarsky Corbett reached double figures for the fourth straight game with 10 points, while Eric Carter narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.

Delaware shot a respectable 44.6 percent from the field and went 9 of 21 from three-point range, but hurt itself by hitting just 4 of 12 free throws. The Blue Hens were also out-rebounded for just the second time this year as Yale held a 37-30 edge on the boards.

Daly hit three consecutive three-pointers early in the first half, while a Darian Bryant three gave UD a 21-15 lead with 11:09 to play in the opening period. However, Yale exploded for a 23-5 run, going up 38-26 with 2:29 on the clock.

Late in the contest, the Hens (5-4) scored eight straight points, the final six on consecutive three-pointers by Daly, to get within 10 with 4:53 to play, but Yale responded with a 7-0 run to put the game away.

WOMEN, Army West Point 61, Delaware 47: Despite jumping to a quick start in opening minutes, the Blue Hens could not overcome a season-high 20 turnovers and 32 percent shooting from the field.

Army (8-2), which won for the seventh time in the last eight games, scored 21 points off turnovers and collected 36 points in the paint to hand the Hens the loss in the first-ever meeting between the two schools in women’s basketball.

Delaware junior forward Sadé Chatman led the Hens with 14 points and six rebounds and sophomore forward Nicole Enabosi posted her third double-double in the last four games with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for the Hens (6-4).

NJIT 57, Delaware State 43: The Hornets hit just 15 of their 53 shots from the field (28.3 percent) in dropping the nonconference decision.

Delaware State was only 4-of-20 from three-point territory also hurt its cause by committing a season-high 30 turnovers, leading to 26 points for the Highlanders.

NaJai Pollard was the only Delaware State player to score in double figures with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting. She also led all players with 10 rebounds to record her fifth double-double of the season and 13th in 36 collegiate games.

In addition, Pollard tied her career-high with five blocks in the contest.

Frostburg State 72, Wesley 65: The Bobcats’ Victoria Diggs neetted 34 points as the Wolverines dropped the Capital Athleitc Conference matchup.

Tiyanna Gibbs led the Wolverines (1-2 CAC, 5-3 overall) with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Alexus Stroud (Smyrna) had 16 points while Brionna Johnson (Smyrna) added 15 and nine rebounds. Monshea Newsome-Murray had 12 points and added four steals and two blocks on the defensive end.

High school wrestling

Senators win seven matches at meet: Dover High scored at least 50 points in six of its seven wins as the Senators finished 7-1 at the Scorpion Duals at Oakland Mills (Md.) High over the weekend.

Dover beat Charles H. Flowers, 65-12; Sparrows Point, 57-11; Calvert, 58-18; La Plata, 37-36; Landsdowne, 52-22; North Point, 56-19 and Oakland Mills, 50-18. The Senators’ lone loss at the even was a 40-24 setback against Maryland’s Middletown High.

Individually, Anthony Fisher (138 pounds) and Daimere Wilson-Turner (182) both went 8-0, while Tykwan Joyner (120), Nicholas Lee (145) and Divine Watkins (152) all finished 7-1.
