Caesar Rodney High ended the regular season with a 16-8 win over Dover in Henlopen Conference Northern Division boys’ lacrosse on Tuesday night.
The victory was the second in a row for the Riders (5-1 North, 9-6 overall), who outscored the Senators, 10-5, in the second half to put the game out of reach.
Patrick Matsko netted a game-high six goals for CR with fellow senior Luke Rankin adding four goals and a pair of assists.
Noah Longest (2 goals), Nolan Aloe (2 goals), Jacob Copio (1 goal, 2 assists) and Jacob Pangle (1 goal, 2 assists) accounted for the Riders’ other goals. Tyler Gross and Joshua Buxton combined for nine saves as CR outshot Dover, 39-23.
William Niebrzydowski (2 assists) and Connor Ashoka Garrett (1 assist) had three goals apiece for Dover (3-3, 8-7). Spencer Valenti tallied the Senators’ other two goals while Kyle Potter made 23 saves.
St. Andrew’s 11, Sussex Tech 10: The Ravens fell to 9-5 with the one-goal loss.
Milford 9, Polytech 8: In a game played Monday, goalie Clay Stevenson made 22 saves as the Buccaneers (5-10) closed the season with a win.
Mark Henderson netted a team-high three goals with Dallas Rhodes (1 assist), Cohen Bonneville (1 assist) and Jonathan Gaglione all scoring two.
GIRLS, Caravel 21, Smyrna 5: The Buccaneers built a 16-3 halftime lead en route to the win.
Shabnam Noroozi-Pooya scored twice for the Eagles with Allison Wheatley, Kaila Hindt and Juliana Kolakowski (1 assist) scoring Smyrna’s other goals.
Gabrielle DiRusso made 11 saves as Caravel outshot the Eagles, 33-15.
Girls’ soccer
Smyrna 3, Lake Forest 1: Casey Bell netted three second-half goals as the Eagles rallied for the win.
Bell’s goals came in a 12-minute stretch ending at the 62-minute mark. Smyrna outshot the Spartans, 12-10.
Hannah Fox scored in the first 17 minutes of the game for Lake Forest.
Archmere 2, Dover 0: The Auks tallied one goal in each half in handing the Senators the loss.
St. Thomas More 2, Glasgow 0: Emily Saint and DahNaija Barnes tallied second-half goals as the Ravens picked up the win on Monday.
Goalie Kourtnie Orth made six saves for St. Thomas More, which finished with advantages of 11-6 in shots and 4-0 in corner kicks.
IR’s Beam wins state honor: Indian River’s Brooke Beam has been named the Gatorade Girls’ Soccer Player of the Year for the state of Delaware.
A 5-foot-4 senior midfielder, Beam has led the Indians to a 12-1 record. She scored 25 goals and passed for 15 assists through 13 games.
A first-team All-State selection, she is also a three-time All-Henlopen Conference honoree and has played for the Region I Olympic Development team.
Beam has maintained a 4.52 GPA in the classroom. Also a talented artist and a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, she has volunteered locally on behalf of a community kitchen and the U.S. Youth Soccer TOPSoccer program serving young athletes with disabilities.
“Beam doesn’t just impact the game, she controls the game,” said Delmar coach Chase Humphrey. “She sees the field well, she can distribute, she can take on defenders and she can find the back of the net with ease.”
Beam has signed a National Letter of Intent to play soccer on scholarship at the University of Richmond this fall.
Softball
Milford 16, William Penn 3: The Buccaneers broke the game open with a seven-run seven inning.
Bri Cahall collected three of Milford’s seven hits.
College baseball
DSU’s Bentley earns MEAC honor: Delaware State outfielder/designated hitter Austin Bentley has been named to the All-MEAC Baseball second team.
Bentley is batting .263 and is tops on the Hornets (tied for 15th in the MEAC) with 31 runs batted in this season. He’s also third on the team with 42 hits and tied for third on the club with six doubles.
Special Olympics
Soccer event rescheduled: Due to Tuesday’s rain, the Special Olympics Delaware Schools Soccer Competition was postponed until May 23.
The event is hosted by Polytech High School and is scheduled to take place from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
Local auto racing
Dover’s Buckson among U.S. 13 winners: U.S. 13 Dragway finally got a break in the weather in time for Sunday’s 2nd Annual Bike Brawl.
Taking wins in the motorcycle divisions were: Peter Mahoney of Parsonsburg, Md. in Pro Bike; Anthony Buckson of Dover in Bad 8 Bike and Marquise Blake of Frankford in Crazy 8 Eliminator.
Scoring wins in the weekly bracket divisions were: W.R. Ketterman of Salisbury, Md. in Top ET; Jim Williams of Seaford in Mod ET; Josh Davis of Seaford in Street; Charles Appler of Millsboro in Hot Rod; Keith Riddle of Millsboro in Jr. Dragster 1 and Jacob Bowie of Greensboro, Md. in Jr. Dragster 2.
This weekend it will be Mopar Muscle Sunday plus the Diesel Pickup Shootout along with the IHRA Summit Point Series. Gates open at 10 a.m. with time runs at 11 a.m. and eliminations at 2 p.m.
