Jessie Prillaman’s hat trick paced third-seeded Caesar Rodney High to a 6-1 victory over No. 6 Concord in the DIAA Division I girls’ soccer state quarterfinals on Wednesday evening.

The victory sends the Riders (12-3) to a rematch with No. 2 Padua (13-2-1) in Saturday’s semifinals. The Pandas topped CR, 6-1, earlier this season.

Megan Powers added a pair of goals for the Riders and Macy Ramsey had one.

Middletown 6, Polytech 1: The No. 8 Panthers fell to the top-seeded Cavaliers after Middletown scored four goals in the second half.

Padua 5, Sussex Tech 1: Kira Short tallied the lone goal for the Ravens but they were eliminated by the defending state champions.

Track and field

Downstaters shine at Meet of Champions: Lake Forest’s Cam Lewis swept the boys’ throwing events at the Meet of Champions while Smyrna’s Myrissa McFolling-Young did the same in the girls’ competition.

Lewis was first in the discus at 142-feet while also winning the shot put with a toss of 46-feet-6-inches. McFolling-Young won the discus at 146-feet and was first in the shout put with a throw of 40-feet.

Dover’s state champion boys’ relay teams won a pair of events. The team of DeShon Harriford, Dalonzo Bouges, Jakari Long and John Rodel Castro won the 4x200 with a time of 1:29.73 before coming back later to take the 4x100 in 42.58.

The Dover boys also had one individual winner — Tayshaun Chisolm took first in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.64. Meanwhile, Caesar Rodney sprinter Dayvhantae McDonald captured the boys’ 100-meter dash with a time of 11.01.

Polytech’s Troy Nixon was the other downstate champion on the boys’ side. Nixon was first in the high jump (6-foot-5).

In the girls’ meet, Naomi Bowser of Smyrna won the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:09.28. The Eagles also took home the 4x200 in 1:45.05 thanks to the team of Saani Edwards, Shaneese LaMons, Taimira Ramseur and Madison Keister.

CR’s Destiny Bailey-Perkins won a pair of events. First she earned the long jump title with a leap of 18-feet-8.75-inches. Then she was part of the winning 4x100 squad along with Patrisha Davis, Yeila Correa and Cailyn Carter (49.09).

The final downstate winner was Sussex Tech’s Ruby Mullen in the triple jump. Mullen jumped 36-feet-5.5-inches to win her title.

Baseball

Seven Henlopen teams in tourney: Seven teams from the Henlopen Conference made the 20-team field for the DIAA baseball state tournament that was determined on Wednesday night.

The tourney starts on Saturday, with five downstate teams involved in doubleheader pairings. The new feature has eight squads playing an opening-round game at noon before facing one of the top four seeds 45 minutes later.

In those first-round games involving Henlopen squads, No. 13 Dover (13-5) plays No. 20 Smyrna (10-8) at Middletown with the winner facing the No. 4 Cavaliers (14-4) afterward.

Also, No. 17 Polytech (12-6) takes on No. 16 Delmar (13-5) at Conrad with the winner facing top-seeded Conrad (16-2) in the second game. No. 18 Sussex Tech (11-7) squares off with No. 15 St. Elizabeth (11-7) at Caravel with the winner then playing the No. 2 Buccaneers (13-4).

Other downstate teams in the field are No. 8 Cape Henlopen (12-6), which hosts No. 9 Tower Hill (15-3) at 1 p.m. and No. 12 Milford (12-6) which plays a 2 p.m. contest at No. 5 Salesianum (12-6).

The tournament continues with the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Tennis

CR girls put five in finals: Caesar Rodney High put itself in position to repeat as DIAA girls’ tennis team state champion by putting all five entries into the state finals on Wednesday.

The Riders’ boys, on the other hand, trail Tower Hill by four points after having only two players advance out of the semifinals.

Two points are awarded for a victory in the finals, which are slated to be held today at the University of Delaware Field House courts. The first matches are scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.

At girls’ first singles, CR’s third-seeded Halle Parker rallied to knock off No. 2 Grace Dignazio of Archmere, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the semis. She’ll be joined in the finals by teammates Natsha Sijan (second singles), Nora Frederick (third singles), Katherine Tamesis-Macaela Thorogood (first singles) and Piper Casey-Chloe Mangubat (second doubles).

In the boys’ tournament, the Riders’ Rishi Gundakaram reached the state finals at first singles while teammate David Haynes is in the state finals at second singles.

Softball

Milford game time moved: Today’s DIAA quarterfinal state tournament softball game between Milford and Appoquiminkink will be played at 1 p.m. on the Jaguars’ home field.

The contest will start earlier than the other three second-round contests due to Milford’s graduation this evening.

College baseball

Delaware 9, Charleston 0: Junior right-hander Ron Marinaccio delivered a sterling two-hit, complete-game shutout as the Blue Hens got off to a fast start in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament.

The No. 4 seeded Hens (31-21) play again today at 5 p.m. in the double-elimination tournament when it faces top-seeded Northeastern (28-23). Dover High grad Nick Spadafino will pitch for Delaware.

The tourney, being played at UNC-Wilmington, has had its schedule shuffled due to rainy weather.

Marinaccio (4-2), who allowed just three base runners all day, gave up only an infield hit and a walk through the first eight innings. He retired 14 batters in a row from the end of the first to the sixth inning.

It was the first complete game effort for the Blue Hens this season and just the second of Marinaccio’s career.

“Today was probably as good a performance as Ronny has had in his career, he was just electric today,” said Delaware coach Jim Sherman.

The Hens connected on 12 hits and walked five times against five College of Charleston relievers. Shortstop Jeremy Ake went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a walk while Diaz Nardo (Cape Henlopen) and Jordan Glover each contributed a pair of hits.

Delaware earned its first CAA Tournament victory since May 22, 2015, when the Hens defeated Northeastern 7-3.

Wesley’s Mears named ECAC’s top player: Wesley College senior outfielder Trey Mears, a Sussex Central High grad, has been named Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year in baseball.

A first-team all-ECAC selection, Mears was joined on the squad by Chris Seibert, a junior infielder who earned second-team honors.

Mears led the CAC in batting average (.500), runs batted in (54), stolen bases (41) and on-base percentage (.568). He also ranked second in hits (68), runs scored (56) and total bases (105).

As of the latest NCAA stat report, Mears leads Division III in batting average, runs per game (1.65), RBI per game (1.59) and stolen bases per game (1.21). Mears also hit seven home runs with 14 doubles.

Seibert tallied 24 extra-base hits, which was tied for the best in the CAC. Seibert also ranked second in the conference in batting average (.411) and RBI (53) and tied for second in in home runs (9).

College track & field

UD’s Hillman headed to NCAAs: The University of Delaware will be represented by juniors Sarah Hillman and Liz McGroarty at the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track & Field East Regionals this week.

The event is being held at the University of Kentucky’s Outdoor Track & Field Complex.

Hillman (Polytech), who captured the CAA discus title and was third at the ECAC meet earlier this month, will compete in the discus championship on Saturday at 2 p.m. Should Hillman finish among the top 12 on Saturday, she would advance to the national championships to be held June 7-10 at the University of Oregon in Eugene.

Hillman has ranked among the nation’s top discus throwers all season long and her UD school-record distance of 186-feet, 2-inches ranks fourth in the field at the NCAA East Regionals and No. 9 nationally. She also holds the UD school record in the shot put at 47-1.5.

McGroarty, who earned a pair of runner-up finishes in the 1,500 meters at the Colonial Athletic Association and ECAC championships earlier this month, will begin action in the 1,500 meter preliminaries today. Should she place among the top five finishers in her heat or have one of the next four top times, she would advance to the quarterfinals on Sunday at 6:30 p.m.

College lacrosse

Hens’ Ortliebe in all-star game: Delaware men’s lacrosse senior midfielder Trupert Ortlieb will compete in the 76th annual United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association North-South Division I/II Senior All-Star Game at Providence College this weekend.

Ortlieb was one of 60 seniors throughout the country selected to participate in the game, which will be played on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
