Roundup: Riders edge Golden Knights 4-3 in rain-shortened game

Caesar Rodney High defeated Sussex Central High 4-3 in a rain-shortened Henlopen Conference baseball game Monday night.

The game was called after five innings. Austin Russell helped CR to the early lead with a two-RBI single in the second inning.

Freshman Ryan Rigby earned the win, going five innings and allowing just three hits. Russell finished 2-for-2 offensively.

Blake Donovan had an RBI double for the Riders in the fourth inning.

Tyler Stanley paced the Golden Knights with a pair of hits.

The two teams did start the sixth inning, with CR scoring twice, but did not make it to the bottom of inning. By rule the entire inning did not count, scores and stats reverted back to the end of five innings, making it a 4-3 Rider victory.

College baseball

Mears earns another honor: Senior outfielder Trey Mears was named the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) South Division III Player of the Week for the second consecutive week on Tuesday.

Mears hit .375 with three home runs, 10 runs batted in, six runs scored and three stolen bases during Wesley’s run in the CAC Tournament. Mears reached base at a .474 clip and slugged .938 for the week. Mears tallied a home run in six of Wesley’s last eight games and has reached base in 34 consecutive games dating back to last season.

Mears holds the highest single-season batting average in Wesley’s history with a .500 average. Mears also has the most doubles in a career (46) in Wesley history and is tied for the most hits in a career (222).

As of the last NCAA stat report, Mears leads Division III in batting average, hits and stolen bases.

UD-DSU postponed: Due to rain and inclement weather, Delaware and Delaware State’s scheduled game for Tuesday was been canceled and will not be made up.

The Blue Hens return to the diamond this weekend when they continue Colonial Athletic Association play at UNCW in Wilmington, N.C.

The Hornets have a game today at home against George Washington before traveling to MEAC rival Norfolk State for a three-game series this weekend.
