Caesar Rodney High pulled away over the final three quarters in posting a season-opening 69-40 victory over Dover in Henlopen North girls’ basketball on Friday night.

The Senators led 12-11 after the first quarter before the Riders went on an 18-6 run in the second quarter to take control.

Alissa Haith (15 points), Victoria Sebastian (10), Kylie Kornegay-Lucas (10) and Destiny Johnson (10) all scored in double figures for CR.

Tajanae Henry-Coney scored 10 points to pace Dover.

Indian River 49, Delmarva Christian 41: Fabrea‘ McCray scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Indians to the season-opening victory.

Danasia Wise added 12 points for IR, which led 27-21 at halftime.

Mara Agapito netted a team-high 11 points for the Royals.

Laurel 53, Seaford 28: The Bulldogs posted a Henlopen South victory in their opener on Friday night.

Boys’ basketball

Lake Forest 65, Delmar 26: Cameron Lewis tallied 19 points as the Spartans opened the season with a Henlopen South win.

The Spartans built a 39-15 advantage by halftime on the first night of the high school winter sports season.

Lake’s Jaysem Vazquez added 11 points with Isaiah Morris scoring 10.

Brooks Parker had a team-high 13 points for the Wildcats.

Smyrna 69, Sussex Central 40: Caleb Matthews tallied 22 points to pace the Eagles to the Henlopen North victory.

Smyrna outscored the Golden Knights, 23-11, in the fourth quarter to finish off the win.

Dymer’e Richardson added 13 points for Smyrna while Matthews sank all four of the Eagles’ three-pointers.

Jahlier Pettyjohn and Ethan Lambert had 10 points apiece for Central.

Indian River 61, Delmarva Christian 55: Isaiah Bratton netted 26 points as the Indians opened the season with a nonconference win.

Trailing by two at halftime, IR outscored the Royals, 18-10, in the third quarter to open up a six-point advantage. Kevin Custis added 15 points for the Indians.

Freshman Andrew Workman paced Delmarva Christian with 17 points, sinking three of the Royals’ nine three-pointers. Joshua Vonhof added 14 points.

Laurel 48, Worcester Prep, Md. 37: The Bulldogs opened the season with a nonconference victory.

College athletics

DSU unveils new center: Delaware State University administration and athletics officials took advantage of a regular visit by NCAA representatives to show off the university’s new and improved Student-Athlete Academic Support Center on Friday.

DSU President Dr. Harry L. Williams, along with Vice-President/Director of Athletics Louis Skip Perkins and Faculty Athletic Representative Dr. Charlie Wilson were joined by the NCAA staffers for the official Student-Athlete Academic Center ribbon-cutting ceremony. The center is located in the school’s William C. Jason Library.

The academic support center expansion, funded by the university, played a major role in the NCAA’s 2015 decision to award DSU a $450,000 grant through its Accelerating Academic Success Program. The NCAA also found that Delaware State’s institutional goals were consistent with the national organization’s Academic Progress Rate and Academic Performance Program.

In addition to an expanded computer lab, the newly renovated center features conference rooms, tutoring cubicles, individual and group study rooms, in addition to renovated staff offices.
