Sussex Tech High, the 15th seed, scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to edge No. 18 Sussex Central, 3-2, in the first round of the DIAA baseball state tournament on Monday afternoon.

The victory sends Sussex Tech (11-8) to second-seeded Smyrna (15-3) for a second-round contest today at 4 p.m.

With Monday’s contest tied, 2-2, Kyle Lux scored the winning run on a fielder’s choice from Brayden Graham. Luke Oliphant and Justin Hill scored first-inning runs for Sussex Tech.

Winning pitcher Matt Warrington allowed only one earned run and two hits while striking out five in four innings. Reliever Brady Parks gave up just four hits and struck out four in three shutout earnings to pick up a save.

For the Golden Knights (9-10), Trey Toppin hit a solo homerun in the first and allowed only one earned run and five hits in five-plus innings. Austin Littleton scored Central’s other run.

The Ravens have won six straight over Central, with four of those contests decided by one or two runs.

Smyrna rallied to beat Sussex Tech, 3-2, in nine innings on May 12.

Milford game suspended: Milford’s first-round tourney game with Red Lion was suspended with the two teams tied 5-5 after nine innings on Monday.

The contest will be completed today at Dover at 3 p.m. The winner will then take on fourth-seeded Dover in a game that won’t start before 4 p.m.

Besides the Smyrna and Dover games, other Henlopen Conference teams in action today include eighth-seeded Cape Henlopen hosting Salesianum and No. 11 Polytech playing at Conrad. Both games start at 4 p.m.

Tennis

Riders lead in tourney: Caesar Rodney’s boys hold the lead while the Riders’ girls share first place in the team standings after Monday’s quarterfinal action in the DIAA tennis state tournaments.

But neither bracket completed the round after heavy rains hit New Castle County.

The quarterfinal round will now be completed with matches today at 3:30 p.m. The semifinals are moved to Wednesday with the finals on Thursday.

In the boys’ tourney, only the first and second doubles matches were finished. CR has 12 points, one point more than both Archmere and Tatnall, which have 11.

Reaching the semifinals were CR’s doubles teams of Cyrus Shanehsaz-Hirshesh Patel (first) and Joseph Gravelle-Adam Ahern (second).

In the girls’ tournament, only the first-singles matches were completed. CR, Archmere and Wilmington Charter all share the lead with 14 points.

Advancing to the semifinals for the Riders’ girls were Halle Parker (second singles), Natasha Sijan (third singles), Katherine Tamesis-Micaela Thorogood (first doubles) and Chloe Mangubat-Caroline Pangle (second doubles).

Golf

Three Henlopen teams in state tourney: Caesar Rodney High, Delmar and Sussex Tech are among the 10 teams chosen to play in the DIAA golf state tournament.

The 36-hole tourney will be held on May 31 and June 1 at Rehoboth Beach Country Club.

Joining the three downstate squads are Appoquinimink, Tower Hill School, Salesianum, Red Lion Christian, Wilmington Charter, Caravel and Archmere.

In addition, 36 individual players will qualify for the tournament through the four conference/qualifying tournaments. From the Henlopen Conference, the top 11 players who aren’t on one of the three teams selected for the state tourney will make the field.

The Henlopen tournament is slated for today at Dagsboro’s Cripple Creek Golf and Country Club.

Rehoboth’s spectator rules will be enforced during the state tournament.

Special Olympics

Soccer event postponed: The Special Olympics Soccer Competition involving Kent and Sussex County middle and high schools has been postponed due to field conditions until Friday beginning at 10 a.m.

More than 1,500 Special Olympics Delaware athletes and Unified partners (peers without a disability) will compete in soccer events across the state during the month of May, including more than 250 at Polytech High School on May 27.

At the competitions, athletes either participate individually or with a Unified partner in skills competitions, or on Unified teams in 5 v 5 round-robin tournaments. More than 60 teams from all levels are expected to play in the tournaments.

“Our athletes enjoy striving to improve their skills in a variety of sports and soccer is no different,” said Jon Buzby, spokesperson for Special Olympics Delaware. “It’s a sport that they not only can compete in through Special Olympics, but because of its popularity in communities around the state, it’s one they are often asked to play just for fun with their friends. Having success in Special Olympics gives them the confidence to do so.”

College cross country

DelTech holding summer camp: Coaches of the Delaware Tech cross country program are offering a training camp for middle school and high school runners.

Camp sessions will be from 6-8:30 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays from June 13-July 28, with a full week of evening training August 1-5. Locations will vary to allow participants to run on a variety of cross country courses.

Coach Ray Parker will be joined by assistants Karin Ryndak and Justin Stoeckel. All three were part of the coaching staff that guided the school’s men’s and women’s teams to second-place finishes in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 19 Championship last year.

Registration is $225, which includes entry into a 5K race on July 2 as well as a camp T-shirt. Scholarships for military families (active duty and veterans) are available.
