Polytech High edged Howard, 68-64, in boys’ basketball on Saturday afternoon as part of the Upstate-Downstate Challenge at St. Georges.

In a game that was close throughout, the Panthers outscored the Wildcats, 38-31 in the first half before holding on for the nonconference win.

Polytech has now won four straight games to improve to 4-2.

St. Georges 71, Dover 53: The host Hawks built a 32-19 first-half lead before downing the Senators.

Appoquinimink 66, Sussex Central 52: The Golden Knights led by a point at halftime before being outscored 37-22 in the second half of the nonconference loss.

Ryhlee Matthews netted 20 points for Central with Jahlier Pettyjohn adding 13. The two players combined to sink five three-pointers.

Hodgson 69, Sussex Tech 50: Jaquan Burton netted 11 points as the Ravens lost the nonconference contest.

The Silver Eagles built a 35-24 halftime lead.

Girls’ basketball

St. Elizabeth 90, Sussex Central 24: The Vikings hit 11 three-pointers and jumped out to a 29-8 first-quarter advantage before posting the nonconference victory.

College basketball

MEN, Binghamton 85, Delaware State 66: Freshman guard Fard Muhammad hit 5-of-7 three-pointers and keyed a big first-half run as the Bearcats (8-5) pulled away early from the Hornets (3-9).

The win was Binghamton’s fourth in the last five games and allowed the Bearcats to match last season’s win total before conference play begins.

Muhammad drilled four three-pointers in a 4:12 span to key a 26-6 run that turned a 7-7 tie into a 33-13 Bearcats cushion midway through the first half.

Binghamton led by as many as 29 points before settling on the 19-point cushion. The Bearcats shot a season-high 61 percent from the floor.

Polytech High grad Devaughn Mallory (16 points, 9 rebounds), Devin Morgan (15) and Dana Raysor (12) all scored in double figures for DelState.

Virginia Wesleyan 100, Wesley 67: Evan Anderson netted 14 points while J.W. Lawson added 10 as the Wolverines (4-5) had a three-game winning streak snapped.

Brian Cameron notched his fourth straight double-digit scoring game with 13 points and added six rebounds.

Wesley’s only lead of the game came on the contest’s first basket. From there, the Marlins took control, going up 52-28 at halftime.

The Wolverines travel to the West Coast to take on Lewis and Clark on Tuesday and George Fox University on Wednesday.

College football

Wesley’s Shade named All-American: For the second consecutive season, Wesley College wide receiver Bryce Shade was named to the D3football.com All-American team, earning a spot on the second team.

Shade caught 63 passes for 1,058 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior. HE also ran 21 times for 117 yards and a touchdown, averaging 9.8 yards per carry. Shade becomes Wesley’s 43rd D3football.com All-American. His selection marks the 14th consecutive season that the Wolverines have earned at least one D3football.com All-American selection.

The most the Wolverines have ever had in a single season was six in 2007.
