Fourth-seeded Woodbridge High needed two overtimes before topping No. 13 William Penn, 60-54, in the second round of the DIAA boys’ basketball state tournament on Friday night.

The hard-earned victory gives the Henlopen Southern Division champion Raiders (19-4) a rematch with North champion Smyrna in the state quarterfinals. The contest will be played on Sunday at 6 p.m. in the Carpenter Center.

The Eagles downed Woodbridge, 61-51, in the Henlopen championship game last Friday. The matchup guarantees that at least one downstate school will be playing in Thursday night’s semifinals.

Woodbridge and William Penn (12-10) were tied 43-43 at the end of regulation and 47-47 at the end of the first OT. The Raiders outscored the Colonials 13-7 in the second overtime to advance.

College softball

Hornets take split: Delaware State pounded out 18 hits in a 16-0 win over South Carolina State for the Hornets’ first win of the season in the opening game of the Georgia Southern Eagle Classic on Friday.

DSU dropped its second tournament game, 9-0, to Eastern Kentucky to fall to 1-5.

In the South Carolina State contest, the Hornets exploded for 13 runs on 11 hits, including two home runs, in the second inning. After a scoreless first inning, Delaware State broke an 18-inning shutout streak in the second.

Micaela Cummings smacked her first career home run, a three-run shot to left, to open the scoring. The Hornets led 5-0 when Vanessa Washington launched a two-run blast over the fence in center field to continue the hit parade. The home run was Washington’s first of the season and 22nd of her career.

Delaware State opened up an 8-0 lead when Sabrina Quarles drew a bases-loaded walk. Dani Velez and Desiree Moreno each had two-run singles, while Jasmine Melgoza had a run-scoring hit later in the second.

DSU sent 18 batters to the plate in the inning.

Southeastern Louisiana 9, Delaware 1: The Blue Hens opened play at the Tennessee Invitational with a loss.

The Lions (9-10) took control of the contest early, taking advantage of three Blue Hen errors to score six runs in the bottom of the first inning before an out was recorded.

Delaware (2-9) got on the board in the top of the second when Sarah Coyne singled to right center to drive home Giovanna Kolofer.

College lacrosse

Women, Canisius 11, Delaware 9: The Blue Hens scored five of the game’s final six goals, but it was too little, too late.

Junior Becky Gohsler once again tallied a hat trick and finished the night with four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Sophomore Megan Santoleri added a career-best three points on two goals and an assist to go along with two draw controls and a ground ball.
