No. 22 Delmar High knocked off 11th-seeded St. Thomas More, 3-0, in the first round of the DIAA volleyball state tournament on Thursday night.

The victory sends the Henlopen South champion Wildcats (9-8) to a second-round matchup with No. 6 Ursuline on Saturday. That match will be played at Brandywine at approximately 6 p.m.

It’s the second straight year that Delmar has reached the tourney’s second round.

The Ravens finish the season with a record of 12-2.

Appoquinimink 3, Cape Henlopen 1: The 14th-seeded Vikings (12-4) battled back in the final two sets before falling in the opening-round state tournament match.

The No. 19 Jaguars (11-5) held on for the 25-12, 25-17, 19-25, 32-30 victory to earn a second-round match with third-seeded Padua.

Abigail E’Nama had eight kills to lead Cape with Sophia Spinelli adding seven kills and four blocks. Logan Shuttleworth contributed 14 digs and 24 assists.

Wilmington Charter 3, Delmarva Christian 0: The 12th-seeded Force earned the opening-round victory by scores of 25-7, 25-19, 25-7 over the No. 21 Royals.

Football

Salesianum 45, Sussex Tech 8: The Sals put the game away in the second half after leading only 10-0 at halftime on Thursday night.

The Ravens’ lone touchdown came in the fourth quarter on a five-yard pass from Tyhir Morris to Noah Jones.

Boys’ soccer

Polytech 1, Smyrna 0: Connor Young scored in the 18th minute as the Panthers closed the regular season with a victory.

Bryce Wahinya assisted on the game-winner as Polytech posted its second straight win to finish 11-4.

Caravel 5, Dover 1: Gavin Williams netted a second half goal for the Senators (2-13), who closed the season with a loss.

Sean Quirk made 11 saves for Dover.

Sussex Central 9, Lake Forest 1: Dalendy Dupervil netted four of the Golden Knights’ first five goals in the first half.

Isaiah Jean Baptiste added three goals for Central, which finished the regular season at 13-2.

Sussex Tech 4, St. Mark’s 1: The Ravens tallied three first-half goals in picking up the nonconference win.

Field hockey

Newark Charter 4, St. Thomas More 0: The Patriots scored three first-half goals in the nonconference win over the Ravens.

Seaford 1, Dickinson 0: The Blue Jays used a second-half goal to down the Rams.

College field hockey

Blue Hens top CAA honors: Delaware had 10 individuals honored by the Colonial Athletic Association in field hockey on Thursday as sophomore Greta Nauck was named the league’s Player of the Year while Rolf van de Kerkhof garnered Coach of the Year honors.

Nauck was joined on the All-CAA first-team by senior Esmée Peet and juniors Taylor Lister and Emmeline Oltmans.

All-Second Team honors went to sophomores Kiki Bink and Lisa Giezeman while Sarah Horgan and Ally Pollak were picked for the All-Rookie team. Senior Marjelle Scheffers as chosen as an All-Academic team selection.

Nauck, who is currently tops in NCAA Division I with 1.26 goals per game, recently set school records with 56 points and 24 goals. She is also third nationally with 2.95 points per contest.

The Hens will vie for their fourth straight CAA crown this weekend at Rullo Stadium. Top-seeded Delaware (17-2, 6-0 CAA) takes on fourth-seeded Drexel (8-10, 3-3 CAA) at 3 p.m. today with second-seeded William & Mary (9-9, 5-1 CAA) squaring off with third-seeded James Madison (12-6, 4-2 CAA) at approximately 6 p.m.

The title game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday.
