Milford High opened its football season with a 64-0 victory on the road at Red Lion Christian on Friday night .

It was the second consecutive year where the Buccaneers put up 60-plus points against Red Lion. Milford defeated Red Lion 67-0 last season, also in the first game of the year.

Sussex Central 35. Laurel 0: Timothy Jones ran for three touchdowns as the Golden Knights shut out the Bulldogs.

Isaiah Barnes also rushed for a touchdown while Brady Bowden threw a 30-yard touchdown pass. Drew Morris had an interception to lead the Golden Knight defense.

Delmar 34, Smithsburg, Md. 13: The Wildcats picked up the season-opening victory against an out-of-state opponent.

Field hockey

Tower Hill 2, Dover 1: Laura Taschner scored on an assist from Isabelle Pilson at 5:39 of the second half to lift the Hillers (1-0) to a season-opening win over the Senators (0-1).

Kristen Adkins scored on an assist by Jada Bogle at 6:57 of the first half for Dover’s only goal. Pilson scored Tower Hill’s other goal.

Madison Francois recorded eight saves for the Senators.

Tower Hill led in shots 11-5 and penalty corners 11-3.

Smyrna 10, MOT Charter 0: Cassidy Cook and Madeline Wilber scored three goals each and Julie Snow added two goals to lead the Eagles (1-0), who also had goals by Lindsey Asbury and Taylor Brittingham. Kaelyn Press had three assists, and Wilber and Snow added one each.

Smyrna led in penalty corners 9-0.

Milford 4, Appoquinimink 1: The Bucs (1-0) scored all four goals in the second half for a season-opening victory, as Daphne Leighty tallied a pair of goals and an assist and Rajene Bowe and Megan Fry added goals. Fry also had an assist.

Milford led in shots 18-2 and penalty corners 13-3.

Delmar 8, Washington (Md.) 1: The Wildcats defeated Washington on opening day.

Delmar led in shots 28-4 and penalty corners 12-4.

Gunston Day School (Md.) 10, Delmarva Christian 2: Delmarva Christian fell to Gunston Day School in Friday’s season opener.

Boys’ soccer

Cape Henlopen 1, George School (Pa.) 1: Zachary Gelof, on an assist by Dane Palmer at the 78:00 gave the Vikings a tie against George School.

Cape led in shots 31-17 and in corner kicks 9-3. The Vikings’ Brent Hochrein recorded 13 saves.

Gunston Day School (Md.) 8, Delmarva Christian 3: Josh Vonhof, Evan Timko and Ben Little scored goals for the Royals in their season-opening loss to Gunston Day School.

College field hockey

Hens defeat Temple 5-2: Six Blue Hens registered at least one point as No. 10 Delaware picked up the 5-2 victory over Temple at Howarth Field.

Sophomore Greta Nauck led all players with five points on two goals and an assist while classmate Sabrina Rhodes notched a career-high three points on a goal and assist.

Redshirt junior Kayla Devlin collected her second goal of the season while freshman Kaitlyn Zook recorded her first-career tally for the Blue Hens (4-1).

Delaware also saw points from senior Esmée Peet and sophomore Lisa Giezeman, who each dished out an assist.

Junior Emmeline Oltmans was credited with the win after stopping two Temple (1-4) shots.

Maddie Merton and Jessika Daniels knocked in shots for the Owls while Maddie Lilliock collected 11 saves.

College volleyball

Wolverines split: Wesley dropped its first match of the day against host Catholic University of America, but rallied back to take a 3-1 victory from Pitt.-Greensburg in the nation’s capital.

Against Catholic, the Wolverines struggled to stop the Cardinals attack, allowing the hosts to hit .463 for the match. The Navy and White fell 25-8, 25-19, 25-16 despite 13 kills and eight digs from Tionne Graves-Brown. Jessica Tynes had nine kills while Codi Ziolkowski added five. Lindsay Burg led the team with 24 assists while Kristin Wissler recorded 12 digs.

In their second match of the day, the Wolverines came out sluggish dropping the first set to Pitt.-Greensburg 25-19. The team responded to the adversity, coming back to earn three straight set wins, 25-23, 25-22, and 25-21, to take the match 3-1.

Ziolkowski and Graves-Brown had 17 kills apiece, and hit .378 and .261 respectively. Graves-Brown notched a double-double with 10 kills while Jessica Tynes added eight kills and 12 digs. Kristin Wissler provided 14 digs and three service aces while Lindsay Burg finished with a career-high 46 assists and 14 digs.

Wesley improves to 4-1 on the season and will look to continue their hot start with a pair of matches on Saturday, facing off against Bridgewater and Shenandoah.

Blue Hens drop a pair: Delaware ran into two talented teams Friday at the Wolfpack Invitational hosted by North Carolina State and dropped a pair of 3-0 decisions to the host Wolfpack during the morning session and to SMU in the afternoon at Reynolds Coliseum.

The Hens (4-4), who remained winless in their last four outings, will look to salvage a win in the tournament Friday when they take on High Point at 2 p.m.

NC State, which improved to 5-3 on the year, took the first match by set scores of 25-21, 25-18, 25-15. SMU (4-3), which earned votes in the preseason AVCA Top 25 poll, won by scores of 25-16, 25-20, and 25-15.

Against North Carolina State, UD freshman Maria Bellinger paced the Blue Hens with nine kills, while fellow rookie Bailey Pearlman added six and senior Autumn Jenkins contributed five to go with nine digs. Julia Anderson dished out 27 assists, Taylor Hollingsworth made 20 digs, and Daria Robinson posted five blocks for the Blue Hens.

Julia Brown led the Wolfpack with 15 kills, while Erin Chatman added 10 kills and a .348 hitting percentage.

NC State raced out to a 10-3 lead in the opening set, and Delaware never got closer than two points the rest of the way as the Wolfpack took the opening stanza by four points. Neither team led by more than two points during a majority of the second frame, while a kill by Corey Perkins put the Blue Hens in front 16-15. However NC State closed the set with a 10-3 spurt to take a two-set advantage.

The Wolfpack never trailed in the third set, and after a Bellinger kill brought UD within 8-7, NC State won eight of the next 10 points to go in front 16-9 and was not threatened from there.

In the setback to SMU, Delaware hit just .035 for the match while the Mustangs tallied a .192 mark and recorded 11 blocks.

Bellinger led the Hens with a game-high 12 kills, just two shy of her season-high and the fifth time she has paced UD this season. Liz Tobey added a career-high 17 assists and Hollingsworth contributed 21 digs for Delaware.

SMU got 10 kills and a .310 hitting mark from Katie Hegarty, 28 assists from Kendall Patterson, and 20 digs from Morgan Heise.

Delaware pulled to within 10-8 early in the first set but SMU scored six of the next eight points to take controle. The second set looked similar as the Hens knotted the score at 10-10 before the Mustangs answered by scoring five straight points to take control. In the final set, SMU led from wire-to-wire to record the victory.
