Lower Sussex scored the final three runs of the game to post a 14-11 victory over Camden-Wyoming in the first game of the Junior League baseball state tournament on Friday night.

The win puts the District III champions in Sunday night’s state finals at Dover. They will face the winner of today’s 7 p.m. contest between Camden-Wyoming and Naamans.

The state champion moves on to the East Regional in Freehold, N.J.

American Legion

State tourney starts today: The American Legion baseball state tournament gets underway today with four games being played in New Castle.

Kent County’s Fox Post (19-5) is seeded third and will face the No. 6 Post 10 Generals (7-21) at William Penn High at 12:30 p.m.

The other three games are being played at Wilson Field. Top-seeded Middletown Post 25 (20-4) opens against No. 8 Milford Post 3 (1-21) at 4 p.m.

The double-elimination tourney continues through Tuesday. The state champion earns a berth in the Mid-Atlantic Regional, which starts on Aug. 3 in Leesburg, Va.

Softball

9-10 tournament

Camden-Wyoming 3, Laurel 0: Winning pitcher Peyton Shields struck out nine as Camden-Wyoming advanced to the state finals on Friday night.

Laurel will take on Canal today at Dover at 7 p.m. with the winner facing Camden-Wyoming for the state title on Sunday at 7 p.m. The state champion advances to the East Regional in Fleetsville, Pa.

Shields (2 hits), Sydney Hatch (1 hit) and Emma Ford (1 hit) all scored runs for Camden-Wyoming.

Bree Coral had three hits for District III champion Laurel with pitcher Haylee Hill adding two.

Junior League

Maryland 14, Camden-Wyoming 11: Camden-Wyoming rallied for six runs in the bottom of the seventh before falling short in its opener of the Eastern Regional on Friday in West Haven, Conn.

Peyton Force had three hits for the Delaware state champions while Kristen Keller, Brie arthur, Jada Courtney and Grace Tuxward all had two. Tuxward and Elise Roscoe both pitched for Camden-Wyoming.

Camden-Wyoming plays again today when it faces Pennsylvania at 1:30 p.m. in the second of three scheduled games.

Senior League

C-W opens regional today: State champion Camden-Wyoming opens play in the East Regional with a pair of games today in Worcester, Mass.

Camden-Wyoming will take on New York at 11 a.m. and then New Jersey at 4 p.m. in the first two of four contests it is slated to play in the tournament.

The East champion earns a spot in the Senior World Series which starts on July 31 at Lower Sussex Little League in Roxana.

College soccer

Hens’ Guillermo on award list: Delaware senior Guillermo Delgado was one of 28 players nationally named to the Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy Watch List.

The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer presented annually to the outstanding male and female players of the year. The list is compiled by the members of the NSCAA Men’s NCAA Division I All-America Committees, based on analysis of returning All-America and All-Region players.

“Guillermo has been a great ambassador for the University of Delaware, our athletics department and our men’s soccer program,” said UD coach Ian Hennessy, who begins his 11th season at the helm of the Blue Hens in 2016. “He is well-deserved of this honor which recognizes the nation’s top player.”

A three-time All-American and All-CAA pick, Delgado is second in Delaware history with 85 career points and 37 career goals.

The forward completed his junior campaign in 2015 with a team-best 24 points and 10 goals. Delgado led the CAA with 1.20 points per game, 0.50 goals per contest and four game-winning goals.
