Roundup: Lake Forest girls rally to defeat Smyrna

The Lake Forest High girls’ basketball team overcame a five-point deficit entering the fourth quarter to earn a 41-35 victory over Smyrna High on Thursday night.

The Spartans outscored Smyrna 18-7 in the fourth quarter. Arika Burrell led Lake with 16 points and Mya Maddox chipped in 10.

Melena Credle was Smyrna’s top scorer with 13 points.

Caesar Rodney 62, Milford 45: Alissa Haith’s 20 points helped lift to the Riders to the win on Thursday.

Brionna Brooks added 11 points for CR. Jonae Boone scored 20 points for Milford.

Boys’ basketball

Caesar Rodney 48, Milford 46: Jaquan Hooks netted 21 points as the Riders held off a late Milford rally.

The Riders had seven threes on the night, including four by Hooks. They built their lead thanks to a 16-9 second quarter.

Dover 57, St. Andrew’s 24: The Senators opened the game on a 19-5 run for a nonconference win.

Terrence Woodlin scored 17 points and had a pair of dunks to pace Dover while Steven Justice added 15 points.

Wrestling

Cape Henlopen 42, Sanford 21: The Vikings reeled off the final 22 points of the match to post the nonconference victory on Wednesday night.

Zackery Flores (285) capped off the night with a fall in 1:59. Anthony Caruso (113) and Joel Torres (195) all had pins for Cape.

Boys’ soccer

Appo’s Dina named state’s top player: Appoquinimink’s Matt Dina has been named the Gatorade Delaware Boys Soccer Player of the Year.

The 6-foot-1, 165-pound senior midfielder and defender scored nine goals with three assists this past season, leading the Jaguars (15-2) to the Division I state semifinals. Dina is the Delaware Boys High School Soccer Coaches Association’s State Player of the Year, and was an All-American selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Dina has maintained a weighted 3.98 GPA in the classroom. He has volunteered at an animal shelter and as a youth soccer coach in addition to donating his time to multiple community-service initiatives through his church youth group.

College athletics

UD changes schedules: Weather concerns have altered the athletics schedules for the University of Delaware men’s and women’s lacrosse and softball teams this weekend.

Due to expected frigid temperatures through the Mid-Atlantic region this weekend, the UD men’s and women’s lacrosse games scheduled for Saturday have been moved up a day and will now take place today.

The Delaware men’s lacrosse team (0-1) will now host Mt. St. Mary’s (0-0) today at 12 noon. The Blue Hen women will open their season at Georgetown today at 4 p.m.

The Delaware softball team, will now play host Campbell in a doubleheader today beginning at 2:30 p.m. with a possible single game on Saturday.
